• Kodu anyone?

From art@DIGDIST/BATTLEST/FREEWAY to All on Friday, May 20, 2011 14:07:00
    Hey all,

    Anyone heard of Kodu?

    http://fuse.microsoft.com/project/kodu.aspx

And I quote from their webpage:

"Kodu provides an end-to-end creative environment for designing, building, and playing your own new games. The core of the Kodu project is the programming user interface. The language is simple and entirely icon-based. Programs are composed of pages, which are broken down into rules, which are further divided into conditions and actions. Conditions are evaluated simultaneously."

It compiles for Windows and XBox 360. I cannot find any type of TCP or Socket information at all, which leads me to believe there is no networking capability (a real downer IMO).

I just found out about Kodu, but I'm wondering if anyone (or their kids) have used Kodu? What do you think? Anyone who hasn't used it--likewise, what do you think?

Personally, I'm glad kids have something to learn with like Kodu. I
remember when they taught us TURTLE... this just seems much better. Hope I get a chance to play with it soon!

    Regards,

That sounds like a fairly cool idea. :) I hadn't heard about it before.

Not with Kodu. I have looked, and looked (and looked!)... no socket API *at all*. Bummer. I am not sure if you can use a .DLL to provide this functionality, it may be worth a dig.

All is not lost tho, if you are intent on network coding, XNA game developers lab from Microsoft is free (it's basically Visual Studio with a ton of shit to make it a game development environment), and compiles for Windows and XBox360. You can also, for a fee, publish into the XBox marketplace.

As for keyboard interface--that would work. There are little keyboards you stick into the bottom of your XBox360 controller (for MSN, etc)... I've seen them for œ20ish, I think.

    Regs,

I got this much from the Microsoft Research website. It looked interesting.

"Kodu is a new visual programming language made specifically for creating games. It is designed to be accessible for children and enjoyable for anyone. The programming environment runs on the Xbox, allowing rapid design iteration using only a game controller for input."

You've certainly given me enough to study now. With OOP, Kudo and now XNA.
I think it'd be interesting to just create a small game to see how it works
    and then expand.

I'll have to get me one of those keyboards. The Microsoft Xbox 360 Chatpad Wired Keyboard looks very nice.

I don't think the X-Box 360 uses an Intel processor, does it? I was thinking there may be a way to hack it so it can run Windows, but if not, perhaps it can be hacked to run Linux.. If so, you could run a Linux BBS on it. :)
