This is exactly how I find BBSing today. I missed it back in the days as I was too young to still see it anyhow valid.
But I remember internet from 95+ with usenet, irc, muds and being elite all there just if you could access these services from unix/linux shell with proper toolset to proove that you actually *know* how to use the internet, not MIRCing around and being constantly "nuked" if on Windows 95.
Those were the days where I was dialing in to the internet to download all

Internet was also all about files and simple hypertext focused on
manuals, simply speaking knowledge. I was downloading knowledge... or
of course warez.

I had just started running my own dialup BBS in 1994 and ran it until 2000..
