I am not entierly sure what this bbs is about but this seems to be a message board (maybe kind of like 4chan but in telnet?). Given that I am new I suppo I should introduce my self.
I hope everybody here will enjoy my presence.
I'm Abraham. I like to bake and I love to make music. I have been writing music since I was around 7 and I have had chamber orchestras play my music.

Sure, this is a messaging *network*. Messages posted here propagate to different BBS which are part of the network too. Think Usenet, but
without the troll overload.

Bulletin boards as we tend to think about them are more than just message boards. What we tend to call "bulletin boards" are online systems that also have online games, files, online chat, etc., in addition to just message boards.

Yeh, I wouldn't have known had I not watched "BBS The Documentary" a few mon ago. Do people still use BBSes for file transfer and door games these days? I've never found an active IRC on BBS however I have been able to engage in live chat with people when trying out games such as LegendMUD and BatMUD. There's a lot more to these networks than meets the eye.

I like the FTN/QWK networks the most. I don't care much for all the usenet spam.

Hmm, I thought the first BBS released in 1978, but BBS message networks were a 1980s thing. :)

There is still some fun to be had on the Usenet, but the network itself
is an empty shell of what it used to be. So sad. If newsmasters had
taken a bit more seriously the task of preventing floods and spams the whole thing would be more usable.
The protocol itself is very nice still. It is gerat to be able to
follow FOSS mailing lists via NNTP at news.gmane.io, for example.
I play a lot ogf Global War at BBSLink. I also play Tradewars 2002 at net298.net.

There's a pretty active game of LORD going on at http://lord.gear.host
(3 actually). There aren't any IGMs installed, but it's still pretty
fun to play since there are others playing as well.

I had heard the first BBS was released around then, 1978 or 1979 by
Ward Christiansen, according to "BBS: The Documentary".
That's all the more reason I should get some more games going with the people that visit and enjoy playing in their spare time or time they use for something fun. I'm thinking right now I'll make a special place for LORD
and make a few games with different IGMs in each of them for people to play around with. It's fun to see people calling and actually resources than everything sitting idle.

Welcome to the both of you. Like I've mentioned in an podcast, I see that more and more people are coming back to the BBS scene or just new people in general. It's great to see familiar and new faces on the scene and it's that much more fun to provide service when/where it's needed.

Bullshit. Some folks (myself included) prefer a stock LORD game,
to eliminate the advantages that some players can get from IGMs.
It's a more pure game without the IGMs.

Ohh, you're in before me. I Googled that earlier on and replied to the message. I see that ARPANET was around prior to Bulletin Boards. I wonder if they were both the same in terms of functionality... I do know ARPANET was restricted to the U.S. Department of Defence and a number of subscribed university departments. I take it that Bulletin Boards are a public use variation of the network? I see ARPANET eventually implemented TCP/IP - it clearly had a large part to play in the development of the world wide web.

You're right. The first public dial-up Bulletin Board was launched on
Feb 16th 1978 by Ward Christensen. I remember him from The BBS Documentary.
No, not really. Arpanet was a precursor to the internet, using TCP/IP protocols & such. BBSes were separate and distinct from Arpanet.

I am mostly playing BBSLink Global War from Hustler's BBS, but I will
show up for tha game later :-)
Sounds like I need to get BBSLink on my system too. Shouldn't be too complicated. Already have it on Raiders Inc BBS.
I look forward to seeing you on my BBS to play Global War. We need a few active participants to get the game going.
