Sup, just joined here out of curiosity and out of pure celebration that bbs has been running for around 2 decades now.
I hope everybody here will enjoy my presence.
I am not entierly sure what this bbs is about but this seems to be a message board (maybe kind of like 4chan but in telnet?). Given that I am new I suppose I should introduce my self.
I'm Abraham. I like to bake and I love to make music. I have been writing music since I was around 7 and I have had chamber orchestras play my music. For baking, I love making different types of bread and have even cultivated wild yeast.
I hope you all welcome me here.

Hello Abraham. I think you're a little mistaken... BBSes pre-date the world-wide-web and have been around for almost four decades, not two. Yes, you're right, Bulletin Boards are a form of message board where people can discuss anything and everything.

Hope you enjoy your stay here!

Welcome. Many of us used BBS's in the last millenium. They were my
first "online" experience as a teenager in the 1990s. Back then, that
was the way to get shareware games, tracker music, demos, utilities,
text files and other miscellaneous odds and ends, including Doom levels
    and game addons.

I'm here more for messaging now, but you'll see that some BBS's have
taken great effort to provide a unique look and experience, such as
Xibalba or Absinthe. I still like the simplicity of them, and it is
nice to be able to navigate around with nicely coloured text screens
than hyperlinks and hamburger menus. It's a more interactive
experience, that makes you feel more like you are in some other place,
    someone elses world.

Yeh, I wouldn't have known had I not watched "BBS The Documentary" a few months ago. Do people still use BBSes for file transfer and door games these days? I've never found an active IRC on BBS however I have been able to engage in live chat with people when trying out games such as LegendMUD and BatMUD. There's a lot more to these networks than meets the eye.

Welcome to the both of you. Like I've mentioned in an podcast, I see that more and more people are coming back to the BBS scene or just new people in general. It's great to see familiar and new faces on the scene and it's that much more fun to provide service when/where it's needed.

i run several well established bbses and i watch the other bbses.

this year has been the worst for real users and 'new faces'

and that's with people sitting at home during the lockdown.

Hmm, I thought the first BBS released in 1978, but BBS message networks were a 1980s thing. :)

You're right. The first public dial-up Bulletin Board was launched on Feb 16th 1978 by Ward Christensen. I remember him from The BBS Documentary.

I play a lot ogf Global War at BBSLink. I also play Tradewars 2002 at net298.net.

You are invited to join the fun.

Thanks, Arelor. I am still trying to find my way about the BBS world. I tend to stick to the boards that I know well such as DOVE-NET, Level-29 (r/retrobattlestations board) and a few other hobby boards. Always up for exploring whatever else is out there whenever I get an evening free.

I had heard the first BBS was released around then, 1978 or 1979 by Ward Christiansen, according to "BBS: The Documentary".

Ohh, you're in before me. I Googled that earlier on and replied to the message. I see that ARPANET was around prior to Bulletin Boards. I wonder if they were both the same in terms of functionality... I do know ARPANET was restricted to the U.S. Department of Defence and a number of subscribed university departments. I take it that Bulletin Boards are a public use variation of the network? I see ARPANET eventually implemented TCP/IP - it clearly had a large part to play in the development of the world wide web.

Bullshit. Some folks (myself included) prefer a stock LORD game,
to eliminate the advantages that some players can get from IGMs.
It's a more pure game without the IGMs.

Ideally, a Sysop offers both a standard game and an IGM game.

I currently run a stock LORD game... not a bad idea to set up an IGM laden version and run both. once I, you know, learn how, and actually have users playing games on my board. Hah.

That's all the more reason I should get some more games going with the people that visit and enjoy playing in their spare time or time they use for something fun. I'm thinking right now I'll make a special place for LORD
and make a few games with different IGMs in each of them for people to play around with. It's fun to see people calling and actually resources than everything sitting idle.

Put up GlobalWar that's my Fav. I play daily.

No, not really. Arpanet was a precursor to the internet, using TCP/IP protocols & such. BBSes were separate and distinct from Arpanet.

am new I suppose I should introduce my self.
