Not sure if any of you have discussed or checked out MBBSEmu yet. It's a pretty cool project that intends to fully emulate a MBBS/WGDOS environment so that those old modules can be run without actually going through the hell of setting up MBBS or WG. You can check it out at http://mbbsemu.com and kind of get an idea of where they're at in development.

At this point it's an alpha release, and I wouldn't recommend running it on a production BBS. It works by creating a Rlogin port for each module you load. From a Synchronet system, you should be able to add the modules individually to your External Programs menu and link right to them.

I run WG 3.2, so my setup is a little bit different. Documentation for setup is very sparse, so you'll kind of have to experiment if you want to try it right now.

So far the project is moving along swiftly. I think they've got a really good start on it, and I just figured I'd toss this out there so you could check it out if you hadn't already found it.

    Interresting...

Wild, though my favorite parts about MBBS were the chat system and
modules... may want to check this out... though getting enough BBS users
into a chat may be much easier said than done at this point.

I'm hoping they make that work. I own a copy of MBBS and have used it as a game server, but it was a massive pain. The real problem is getting hold of some of the games, as the folks over there are convinced that stuff is worth something. Too bad.

Yes, the multi-user chat was always one of my favorite parts of MBBS/WG. I was just reading earlier today that the folks at http://themajorbbs.com have purchased the MBBS/WG source code from whomever had acquired it when Galacticomm ceased operations. They have released a free version of The Major BBS 6.25 that you can download and setup in a VM. Since it's still DOS-based, it is not the easiest setup in the world, but glad to see something happening with that stuff.

It looks like they intend to clean up Worldgroup 3.2 code and rebrand the new version as The Major BBS v10. It will evidently be an upgrade for existing WG Sysops, but will also be made available for purchase (hopefully a lot cheaper than the old GCOMM pricing) to the general public. Now I've got another project to monitor! LOL

(Ah, a test of the word wrap quoter... from some systems I've been getting
all the text on one line.)

That's great news, and I'm glad the MBBS scene is slowly changing their strategy and becoming helpful... now if only we could convince the ISV folks to release their games (either at all or very cheaply) ... I have a license for Worldgroup / MBBS but I don't own any of the games... and even if I did because of the serial number system I probably couldn't install them if I did.

I've spent the better part of 2 decades getting my WG system setup the way it is now. It's a labor of love though, because I always enjoyed calling MBBS/WG systems. It looks like they're trying to get everybody left in that community on-board for this new Project Phoenix thing. We'll see how it goes. I would hate to have to start all over if they release a new version of the software that requires all of the modules to also be re-compiled. There are too many that have been lost forever I think.

I hear you. I'm on board for it... but I've already written a MBBS/WG theme for my BBS software... so I just need MBBS for a door server...

...I have the source to some of the modules... I've made sure that Rick has it.

Where can you download the entire program with all the data files? This link only includes two or three of the files.

There are only a couple of files. You have to add the modules in yourself that you want it to run. They have pretty good documentation for setup now on their main site... mbbsemu.com
