Hey. I just bought a new laptop with Windows 10 Home. I'm
just glad I did the research before I made a purchase. I
use software I can't get from Microsoft and I would have
been pissed if I could only DL from Microsoft. The audio
software I use is not available for linux so I had to make
a choice. I'm going to end up dual booting anyway. After
30 years of computing I'm still dealing with the Microsoft
    monopoly. It sux!

I thought there were ways to operate both OSes at the same
time these days. Isn't that accomplished using VMs (virtual
    machines)?

Do you actually need to dual-boot to the other OS just so that
you can operate your audio software?

There's option like Virtualbox for running Windows or Linux or vice-versa or there's now the Linux Subsystem for Windows.

It's becoming more common then is wanted for modern laptops to have some hardware compatability issues on linux, but from what I understand it seems to be that SystemD is the root.

Then again, I am very ignorant.

You know. I'm not familiar with virtual machines. What would it take to setup? What software would you recommend? Don't I need to own a copy of Windows? Does setting up a VM void the warranty? I took everone's advice and purchased a Lenevo. What's the recommendation for running Windows 10 with my owned copy of Amplitube 5 but live in Ubuntu for working with the BBS? I'm all ears. I don't see how I can run a VM if Windows is preinstalled but what do I know. ;-)
BTW the BBS is not on my local machine. It's on a remote Ubuntu server. I work with Ubuntu locally and remotely.

You can use a virtual machine to run a different OS, but sometimes it's better for the OS to have direct access to the hardware. If you're doing something that does heavy video or audio processing, you might want the OS to run directly on the hardware. For music recording specifically, I think there may be additional latency added with a VM, so it would probably be better to do that directly on the hardware.

Exactly this. I have a MacBook Pro and while I can run some games in Parallels on my MacBook, if I use BootCamp and boot natively into Windows I find the
    ames
are much more responsive than running in a VM.
