If someone hosted Mastadon server and established specific message areas, would those same areas be available to someone else's Mastadon server?

Mastodon is a politized mess at this point, with users harassing operators
of servers who don't ban impopular users, people demaning for hardcoded blacklists in the reference software itself etc.

That doesn't sound too good then. :(

Does the individual user and or the server operator have the ability to block specific users? Telegram's "block user" is very simple and powerful.

I took a quick peek at Mastadon. It looked promising.. but then I noticed the variety of different "apps" available for the Web vs Desktop and got confused. Can those apps be used interchangeably?

The sample screenshot at Mastadon's main page looks a lot like Telegram.

There is a reason why I am prowliing BBSs instead of popular web services these days. Also, long life IRC!

A certain charm and simplicity remains with interacting with BBSes directly. Networked message areas like Fidonet/Dovenet are a bonus.

I don't know, but I think that is likely.

Regarding apps galore, that is to be expected in FOSS. I suspect there will be 999+ clients you can use developed by fans and hobbyists. Most nodes have web interfaces so you can always use them if you dare.

A quick search online reveals there are things like text blocking and such for Mastodon so at the very least I expect moderation tools to be available.

It's more like Twitter in that you have a timeline. You could use
hashtags to identify threads, but you'd need to be subscribed to
their feed to see/search them, if I'm not mistaken.

Urk, that puts me off. I don't like the large unstructured feeds of Instagram and Twitter. :/

I'm the same way. I don't have an Instragram account anymore, but I do follow a select few accounts on Twitter more to keep up with some news, alerts & notices for work.

I had to delete Reddit from my phone as well as it's now just one long toilet paper roll of never ending "content". I only look at Reddit on my laptop now.

I tend not to use Twitter or Instagram much, myself. I don't like that Instagram only lets you post photos (I know that's the main idea), and I'm also not very fond of hashtags. I'd think there would be a better way to tag posts that isn't so visible. Also, some people tend to #speak #in #hashtags, which I find a little weird.

I revived my Twitter account the other day, mainly so I can access Twitter links that some people I know keep sending (many are actually of interest), but I don't actively follow my feed. My Instagram account is still active, but hardly used.

I follow little on Reddit, but its notifications are useless, keeps pushing stuff I don't follow. I know others have complained about that "feature" in Reddit.

I don't mind hashtags, they are easy to use, even if you #overuse them. :D
