If I told my children to logon to a BBS they'd laugh at me. Now days, my children hop onto Facebook, Tiktok, and Instagram. They don't see the beauty and simplicity of BBSes.

My 16 year old (middle) daughter logs-in to play Minesweeper and
sometimes uses the web interface for checking her mail. My whole
family uses the mail server without realizing its on a BBS.

You *need* to make then realize it! Then they tell two friends and they tell two friends... to inform the masses that BBSes can be an interesting thing.

Ha! Truth is, they know it... but they just don't really care so long as its working. :-)

I tried to move my wife to one of my servers some years ago, she informed me that it would take an act of God for that to happen. The children, they've been using Gmail for years and won't get off of it. Ultimately, they don't trust me to ensure it stays working all the time even though they know that I work in the financial sector and any downtime costs the company millions.

    Oh well.

Yeah, I have a hosted domain with IMAP, spamassassin and webmail, and
after an experiment she still uses her gmail account with her maiden
name and a digit in the LHS.

I forward my mail from that same domain to gmail, and fired up
Thunderbird for the first time in a while. It downloaded a serious
update, and after playing with a mail client again I'm tempted to go
back to it this year, lessen the amount of data I have with Google,
and go back to using server-based tools.

... What is the reality of the situation?

I forgot that Gmail splits the messages up into categories. What's in my "inbox" is just categorized there. I opened up Apple Mail on my MBP and found myself with 10,000 e-mail needing to be read. Fuck me.

You can turn categories off. I did, because they were giving me the shits. LOL
