i just found out that a former close friend who drifted away
    killed himself after christmas.

Because of covid, his business was suffering and he was losing everything.
His great truck, his house that he was so proud of and his livelyhood.

blew his brains out. father of 5.
he pushed other people away too. he was depressed but hiding it well.

    That sucks, man.

A lot of depressed people are not actually hiding it. They just get tired of bringing their problems up and getting ignored, so they stop complaining and carry on until they break.

Sorry to hear about your friend, that sucks. :( Depression can be nasty and a lot of men won't talk about it. Attitudes are slowly changing, but need to change faster.

I wonder if he'll be listed as a COVID death.

The gov't response to COVID has already killed more people than COVID.

That is really sad. I lost my closest childhood friend to suicide over 12 years ago. He left a wife and kid. He hid it well until the last day or
two apparently. Unlike COVID we never really knew what pushed him to it.

If he managed to get custody, she must have brought plenty of drama.
Having a spouse or co-parent who causes a lot of drama is a real strain on one's sense of self.

Had a guy in my area who did that. Everything seemed fine. He seemed happy. Had a good job, nice girlfriend, was sociable.

Then he killed himself and no one knew why.

Society puts pressure on everyone in different ways. Today that pressure
is mostly political (whether you are anxious about the presidential election
or COVID). But everyone has a breaking point and what different people do when they break will be wildly different.

The term is "sympathy" not "empathy".

I cannot feel the same feelings (empathy) because I don't know the person who committed suicide.

But I cannot feel sympathy either because I'm too angry about the gov't causing the suicide in the first place.
