• Running beside the BBS a forum server

From Michael Selhof@2:240/8050 to All on Sunday, February 18, 2024 16:26:32
A friendly hello to all readers!

Some people might know that I run a BBS.
In addition, I thought early on about how the topic of BBS'ing could
be made more popular? I noticed that a lot of users ˙prefer˙ to go
to a forum rather than a BBS. That's why I had firmly planned to open
one as a second project. And what can I say.... The basic structure
of the forum server is now in place and waiting for people to come in.
This forum exclusively deals with the topic of BBS'ing. Ideally, there will
be enough people who would like to share their experiences or suggestions
on this topic? Long story short sense....

    www.sysops-finest.org

would be the address. And the server ist multilingual (german/english) with it's main treads.

    Have a great day!

    Michael Selhof, AKA Mike

Not necessarily, at least not in my case. I have regular callers here.

    Hello Atreyu

Thanks for your answer. Of course this is also accepted!

The deeper meaning of this forum are not the callers. Apart from that, behavior
varies from country to country. This is actually about us sysop's. The aim of the forum is to bring many Sysop's together at one table in order to create as much dialogue as possible. To bring together at one point the knowledge that is actually distributed across many networks. It is important to start from the
lowest common denominator. The fun of our hobby, BBS'ing.

Ideally, knowledge can be imparted so that newcomers get a good start in this hobby. However, in my opinion, a worthwhile goal. It was just supposed to be
    a hint and offer!

And we are living in a democracy. So this is okay for me, if you are not interested.

Greetings from "good old germany" and happy BBS'ing!

I'm game for really any type of conversation about BBS'ing.... but.... having been around for a long time, I notice the following patterns.

    - Linux Linux Linux. An obscene amount of Linux, to the point of a few who
felt the need to shove it down my throat when opportunity arose. Yes I know theres a tinkering aspect of Linux. Its fun to mess around with but I'm the type of Sysop who made an XP system work and largely left it alone. I simply do not have interest in the tech-aspect that much anymore so that excludes me from at least 90% of most conversation.

    - Every few years or so a Sysop makes noise with the "Next Best Thing" which when that does not catch on, that Sysop and conversation vanishes.

    - Sysops who have really good intentions and well-meaning, who up and vanish, in some cases the ZC of a popular Othernet which really had the good Sysop convo you mention.... left many Sysops "hanging" with a bad aftertaste.

But its fun to run a board and I cannot imagine my tech-life without it.

    Dear Atreyu

Thank you again for your answer, which in my opinion gives rise to at least
2 common approaches. 1. I love the variety of computers in the mailboxes.
A sysop with a Commodore C64/C128, Amiga, Atari ST has just as much
right to exist as anyone else! What counts is the shared hobby! And these sysops can also exchange their experiences on this forum. Cause it is divided into general and special and can be expanded as the Sysop's required it!
Living democracy it's called I think. And again could be bundled at one point!

    2. In the lists of OS's, Linux is an operating system like any other. But again... this forum is not about one or "the Linux Sysops", but about "us sysops!" With all the "colors" and "facets" that this hobby brings with it!
I like to compare this to Apple and Andriod! Apple users don't want Android and vice versa. It therefore makes no sense to convince one side of the other side. But what connects both of them. They have a smartphone! And there
lies the approach! And by that I actually meant everyone who is interested, regardless of which operating system and which BBS software they use to operate their system! In my opinion, this point of view is not very effective and leads to isolation. It isn't really hard to make a turnaround and eyes wide open....

And I didn't write that this idea of mine is the newest and the best in the
world. As I have already written!!! This forum could be a regular meeting place for Sysops. But doesn't have to! In any case, I have no intention of ending this again. It doesn't cost me much and is free for everyone else.

Whether or not always depends on a certain curiosity, general interest and acceptance by the general public. In this case the Sysop's and interested User. There will always be one side that extends a offering hand, which
others may or may not accept!

I can't really see any harm here, but I can see a possible benefit for the cause, not for me! And I'm old enough that setbacks are a part of life!
Then you just get up again, straighten your "crown" and carry on!
    Just for our shared hobby!

There it was again, our commonality!

Sometimes live could be so easy :-)

lol I'm smiling right now and don't be angry with me Atreyu.
But such discussions are also absolutely suitable for the forum!

Have a nice day Atreyu and to everyone reading along

    Mike

I still like running boards that have nothing to do with Linux, Windows and the common PC. They are way to common, abundant and to easy to toss up a BBS.

So what do you run that does not require an OS.
