    Hi, All!

    Once in winter one man went to fishing and took his dog with him.
    He drilled a hole in the river ice, cast his rod and decided to have a
    snack. The dog gladly wagged his tail knowing that some snack would
    certainly be his. The man had a drink of vodka, made a huge sandwich and
    just prepared to eat it, when suddenly a huge pike sprang out from the
    hole, snatched the sandwich from his hand and dived back. The stunned
    man looked first at the hole then at his dog and said to him, "And you
    where have you been watching?!" The dog said, "I dozed off myself, really!"

    I should find it funny at first, as long as I thought it a
    trick taught the dog by dumb drilling. But as it continued
    to speak coherently, I should grow alarmed and might try to
    laugh the matter off, although my laugh would be forced.
    Then I should misdoubt my sanity and senses, which is not
    funny at all no matter the looks of the dog!

    The idea of this story is that the dog was so stunned that it even
    forgot about it was a dog. That's why it said those words.

    Ah... where I come from, talking animals are quite routine in jokes & in stories intended for children. What strikes me as amusing is the idea of a fish appropriating a person's lunch because seagulls do that around here & you might be well advised to keep your wits about you in certain public places. I also imagine humans who've fallen asleep during a boring lecture can relate to dogs or cats who fall asleep when they're safe, warm, and dry and don't expect anything which requires their immediate attention to happen for some time.

    While this tale didn't strike me as particularly amusing at first, it seems to grow on me the more I think about it.... :-))
