A true Fidonet nestor has left

What probably was the oldest nodelisted Fidonet sysop in Fidonet
    history has signed off.

With only one and the same node number for almost 27 years, not
counting a clerical error in 1996, his line changed just two times.

That also must be some kind of record, and surely will earn him
the title of a true Fidonet nestor.

A recent photo of Holger can be seen here:

    GENERAL ARTICLES =================================================================

    Holger was my grandfather
Johan Granholm <jkgranholm at gmail dot com>

    Hi Bj”rn,

Thank you for keeping in touch. Holger was my grandfather and he
passed away last Saturday, February 5th at 11 Finnish time at the age
    of 91.

He has always been active and independent but he has had a tough time
in recent months. He fell and broke his wrist in early December and
after that he became more and more tired. He went to the hospital the
week before Christmas & got a pacemaker on December 22nd.

However, he had to come home for Christmas so we could celebrate
Christmas together, which was very nice. After the Christmas weekend,
he got worse again, and has been struggling with a pneumonia for the
past month, but his body can no longer bear it.

He has always been an important person in my life and he leaves a
great loss and void behind. I moved to Sweden in 2006 but have gone
home often and visited him & we talked on the phone several times a
    week.

Holger was born in Helsinki on January 23, 1931 & he moved to Åland
with his wife and children in November 1947 where he was offered a job
and after working for a few years as a radio technician he trained as
a television technician so started his own radio & television business
which he ran until 1972. He was active in motorsport and competed in
    both boating and motorsports.

He was also an avid radio amateur & took an early interest in
computers and bought his first computer in 1982. He ran his BBS with
great enthusiasm and I know it was an important interest for him.

He loved to exercise & kept skiing in the winter and long walks the
    rest of the year.

He became a widower in 2012 & now leaves children & grandchildren with families.

Funeral will take place on Saturday 26 February at 13:00 Finnish time
in the circle of the next of kin.

    Sincerely Johan

A long time Fido sysop has left Fidonet
    Christer Jonson <2:201/0>

I have received the word that Holger Granholm has peacefully passed
    away a week ago.

Holger joined Fidonet in april 1995 as 2:20/228 -- HAM-BOX, from the
isle ¸land, between Sweden and Finland, and he kept that number until
    the end.

He was a skilled technician and a dedicated radio amateur, known over
the world as "Sam" with call sign OH0NC. He took part in many
contests and other event and he also created many shareware-programs
for calculating amateur radio antennas of various kinds.

In a newspaper from ¸land dated 1965, he is seen among other boy
scouts when they participate in a world wide radio event where young
scouts reach out to each other using amateur radio stations.

Holger was a frequent contributor in various echoes, in particular
the AMATEUR_RADIO echo but as he was still using OS/2 he also visited
various OS/2 echos as well as the PCBOARD echo.

In 2007 he moved to net 201 but kept his nodenumber. As we were both
radio amateurs we had many contacts in various matters but we never
had the chance to meet over the air.

From 2007 until the end, his system kept polling my system daily
using plain ol' copper wire technology but now the phone has stopped
    ringing.

R.I.P Holger, aka Sam, we miss you!

    73
    Christer

Today we say farewell to an oldtimer.

Today we say farewell to an oldtimer. Holger Granholm, AKA 2:20/228.
Or in the other hobby ON0NC. There is a fairly large overlap between
the Fidonet community and the HAM community and me and Holger also
    shared that other hobby.

I do not recall ever having made an over the air contact with Holger,
but I might have. And so I mourn the passing of a fellow Fidonet sysop
and a Fellow HAM, now a silent key.

    Holger rest in Peace.

    -----------------------------------------------------------------
And then Holger is gone ...
    Ward Dossche - 2:292/854

February 5th 2022 was going to be a beautiful Saturday in early
spring, as there can be that many ... the grandchildren were there,
there was good food, there were drinks, laughter, joy ...

But somehow the day would not end as joyous as it started because
somewhere while the minutes ticked away the Fidonet-wires grew a
little more silent. Barely noticeable for the average lurker,
something had changed ... Holger Granholm had left us.

Holger and I never met, our interactions were pure Fido-style but
how wonderful they were. I always considered him the main tourist
agency for the Aland island archipelago. He managed to send me
piles of documentation and tried to lure me there for a vacation.
His description was wonderful and very appealing, but it never
materialized due to a number of irrelevant reasons.

We talked about the challenges of living on a Finnish island but
connected to the world via Sweden ... and about global warming, the
rising seas and Aland being that low. We talked about families in
a way that only the intimacy of Fidonet affords us ... a man with a
rainbow of talents and interests ...

Although we never had any physical interactions, when the news hit
it felt as a loss anyway. I think Holger must have been a beautiful
person, he will be mourned by his family and missed by his friends
... there was no way around it, one could only be his friend.

It's only 1 line in the nodelist but the void will be felt by all
    that were touched by him.

Signing-off .. unfortunately .. but thankful for a great friendship.

    Ward Dossche - 2:2/1000

An election for FTSC standing members was announced which starts
on Sunday, 30th of January 2022 at 20:00 UTC.

To ensure a sufficient number of FTSC-members with proven
technical background in Fido-software development, the ZCC has
decided to activate its prerogative to establish a nominating
committee and approach a number of people of whom it believes
they could be a valuable asset.

    Notes:

To make an IPv6 connection to a node connected via 6to4 tunneling
one may have to force the mailer into IPv6 (-6 option in binkd's
node config for binkd up to 1.1a-96, -64 option for binkd 1.1a-97
and up when compiled with AF_FORCE=1). If the destination address
is a 6to4 tunnel address (2002::/16) many OSs default to IPv4 if
    an IPv4 address is present.

    Hello Everybody,

    Holger was my grandfather
Johan Granholm <jkgranholm at gmail dot com>

A life well lived. Never met him, same as most others. But
he did leave an impact on many, including those on distant shores.
He will be remembered. Hopefully in a good way.

Holger was born in Helsinki on January 23, 1931 & he moved to +land
with his wife and children in November 1947 where he was offered a job

Wow! That is the way to do it! First get married and have kids.
Then move to an island and get to work! Not the other way around,
    as folks do today ...

and after working for a few years as a radio technician he trained as
a television technician so started his own radio & television business which he ran until 1972. He was active in motorsport and competed in
    both boating and motorsports.

Hmmm. Most folks here have to work 'til they drop. And Holger only
had to work some 25 years? And while also having time to compete in
motorsports and boating? Jeezus! What did he do when he retired?

He was also an avid radio amateur & took an early interest in
computers and bought his first computer in 1982. He ran his BBS with
great enthusiasm and I know it was an important interest for him.

Did this guy ever sleep? Nobody has that much time. To work, compete
in motorsports and boating, be ham operator, and also dabble with
computers. And to do it for 25 years, without getting fired? That is
    not humanly possible ...

He loved to exercise & kept skiing in the winter and long walks the
    rest of the year.

Now wait a minute! There are not enough hours in a day to do all
of that! The sun does set at least once a day so folks can get some
    sleep.

He became a widower in 2012 & now leaves children & grandchildren with families.

Well, he always had to find time for her. Or make time. Even when
there was not enough time in a day. Or night. And then, when she was
gone, he had to find time for his kids, and grandkids, ...

Funeral will take place on Saturday 26 February at 13:00 Finnish time
in the circle of the next of kin.

Viking funerals are so much fun. Not uncommon for Vikings to
sacrifice a slave - or two or three - when a respected Viking goes
off to Valhalla. The Norse poem "The Short Lay of Sigurd" describes
how this human sacrifice takes place -

    Bond-women five
    shall follow him,
    and eight of my thralls,
    well-born are they.
    Children with me,
    and mine they were
    Are gifts that Budhi
    his daughter gave.

As everybody knows, or should know, the most common type of burial
in Viking culture began with cremation on a pyre. Until some ingenius
soul decided to place the warrior's body on a longboat, float it out
to see, and have all attendees stand in silence as a skilled archer
sends a flaming arrow to set the whole thing on fire.

These funeral festivities would carry on for days, sometimes weeks,
and would feature several feasts. Depending on how much beer, or grog,
    Vikings could find or handle.

Something tells me virtual Viking funerals would be safer. But
far less fun. Which is why we should all go to Aland and *ENJOY*,
    to *CELEBRATE* a life well-lived!

    Happy Trails, Holger.
