The phases of Venus

If you have a small telescope, the coming days and weeks are a good
time to take a closer look at Venus. Venus is easely visible in the
South West from just after sunset untill about midnight. It is the
brightest celestial object in the evening sky apart from the moon.

Venus is the second planet in our solar system. It is one of the two
zo called inner planets. Its orbit lies between that of the earth
and the sun. The other inner planet is Mercury.

On the 4th of June Venus will reach its maximum western elongation,
meaning its apparent distance to the sun is at maximum. It will then
move into the direction of the sun until inferior conjunction on the
13th of August when it is more or less in front of the sun.

In the mean time the physical distance between Venus and Earth will
decrease, Venus comes closer to earth and so it will look bigger in
the telescope. More interesting, its phase will becomme more
prominent. Like the moon, Venus shows phases. At maxumum elongation
it will be "half Venus". When Venus moves towards earth and moves
toward inferior conjunction, it will turn into a crescent before
disappearing althogether.

The coming weeks this may be interesting to watch with a small
telescope. In the later phase, it may even be visible with a good
pair of binoculars. Enjoy!

The phases of Venus

I can add, that if you find it hard to locate stars and planets on the sky, I can recommend the free app Planets.

It's available for iOS as well as Android, and uses the built-in compass in most Pads and Phones to keep track of the direction.

You just hold your device up like a small window to the sky and immediately, if the sky is clear, you'll first be able to find the Moon, and then Venus is nearby.

The letters N, E, S and W is written slightly below the horizon, and you'll be looking towards the West to find Venus. The planets, the Moon and the Sun are all located along the dotted line that marks the ecliptic, and they are represented by big images of themselves rather than the bright dots, that represent the stars.

During the Trump administration, 1.1 million people lost their
lives due to the pandemic, and another half million people becoming
unable to function or live a normal life. While some may argue that
none of this is Trump's fault, many say otherwise.

All viruses mutate. And all politicians do, over time. Some become
more toxic. Others more benign. But all mutate, for better or for
worse. And that is a fact we all must live by. Or doom ourselves to
oblivion.

Politicians have the skin of an elephant, and the memory of a gnat.
They know today's enemies may become tomorrow's very best friend.

But viruses do not care. They just do what they do. Until they can't.
