Is that a stable libc 2.37 release? I'm going to be busy here for a bit. :)

I just updated the kernel to 6.1.9 earlier today and I see penguins here on my bios boot machine. I didn't change anything so I don't know what the difference is but everything is a s it should be.

    Hey Alan!

Is that a stable libc 2.37 release?

Yes it is. Also I just saw a notice from the powers that be confirming it's official status.

I'm going to be busy here for a bit. :)

So far it has been the easiest update I've witnessed thus far, and I've witnessed quite a few over the decades.

I just updated the kernel to 6.1.9 earlier today and I see
penguins here on my bios boot machine.

Excellent news. I'll give it a try here very soon.

I didn't change anything so I don't know what the difference is
but everything is a s it should be.

    I like when that happens.

    for a bit. :)

No kidding. Just ran into a glitch with grub on both uefi and legacy with kv-6.1.12 so rather than downgrade the kernel I opted out for taking a grub-git out for a cruise. It worked!!! I just got it working about half an hour ago and am currently bringing everything back into sync on this overpriced toy. :-)

What a pain but I think it'll be worth it.

I just updated the kernel to 6.1.9 earlier today and I see
penguins here on my bios boot machine.

No love here yet but closing in on it. I currently have two legacy machines I can try it out on. I figure by the weekend I *should* have a working legacy boot but no promises on boot penguins as both are i915. I may switch one to a uefi later.

At the moment LFS has the boot but if I run into trouble I'll boot with slackware.

What a pain but I think it'll be worth it.

Yep, I am just working on some depenencies for the desktop. I'm going to have a go at getting xorg and friends installed tonight. If I succeed I'll be building an xfce desktop tomorrow.

I don't see the penguins until the screen goes blank (kernel modesetting I think) and then they show up after that. I never saw them until I added the nouveau module.

I have the boot logo selected in ..

make menuconfig -> Device Drivers -> Graphics support

    It's right at the bottom.

    Hey Alan!

If I succeed I'll be building an xfce desktop tomorrow.

You'll succeed. If you got this far then the above is well within reach.

I never saw them until I added the nouveau module.

    I've got the right driver;

    lspci -s 00:02.0 -k
00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation HD Graphics 500 (rev 0b)
    DeviceName: Onboard - Video
Subsystem: Intel Corporation HD Graphics 500
    Kernel driver in use: i915
    Kernel modules: i915

Still no love on legacy boots which is the case for the node. No big deal but like you previously said that it would be nice to see them working.

For the record, I am still getting the proper framebuffer loading but no boot penguins other than when I use uefi which as of this writing isn't really working on a couple of machines for whatever reason. Does it matter?

I did succeed. I have a nice xfce desktop running now. I needs a bit more but it is up and running.

I never saw them until I added the nouveau module.

    I've got the right driver;

    lspci -s 00:02.0 -k
00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation HD Graphics 500 (rev 0b) DeviceName: Onboard - Video
Subsystem: Intel Corporation HD Graphics 500
    Kernel driver in use: i915
    Kernel modules: i915

    I see this..

01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: NVIDIA Corporation GF119 [GeForce GT 610] (rev a1)
Subsystem: ASUSTeK Computer Inc. GF119 [GeForce GT 610]
    Kernel driver in use: nouveau

I usually run the nvidia drivers but I inslalled Quake along with quakespasm yesterday and it runs nicely with the nouveau driver.

I'll keep the nvidia drivers handy but so far I don't need them.

Still no love on legacy boots which is the case for the node. No big deal but like you previously said that it would be nice to see them working.

When I ran the nvidia drivers I never saw any penguins, I'm not sure why.

I prefer the nouveau driver because I can add video=640x480 (or other modes I suppose) and I get a 80x30 terminal screen, just the way I like it.

When running the nvidia driver I get an 80x25 screen and I can't seem to change it anymore. In the past I used vga=???? and was able to get other screen dimentions but that doesn't seem to work anymore.

For the record, I am still getting the proper framebuffer loading but no boot penguins other than when I use uefi which as of this writing isn't really working on a couple of machines for whatever reason. Does it matter?

The penguins don't matter much as long as the machine boots but it's curious whatever happened to them. I'm almost certain if I use the nvidia drivers I won't see them anymore.

No surprises there. Now the fun stuff. :-)

I inslalled Quake along with quakespasm yesterday and it runs

Awesome. My workstation uses the amdgpu driver on an uefi boot which upon bootup 16 penguins show up on the top row but only if the resolution is 1080p or greater. Hence the "Fidonet 4K" part in the tagline.

    :r !lspci -s 04:00.0 -k | sed 's/^/ > /;s/\t/ /g'

Subsystem: Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. [AMD/ATI] Renoir
    Kernel driver in use: amdgpu
    Kernel modules: amdgpu

I see we are both missing the tabs (\t) when we posted our respective 'lspci' output. The above follows MSG specs where tabs are verboten.

The penguins don't matter much as long as the machine boots but
it's curious whatever happened to them.

On this machine the boot penguins were critical and grub's uefi boot fixed that. Also the additional ascii penguins was a nice distraction while I pondered the next move. At the moment I seem to be idling. Spring fever?

Did you have a problem with grub saying there were no valid file systems found?

I ran into that and couldn't install grub. Even using a grub rescue cd failed to load up. I was building a fresh install after making changes to my partition scheme so I had fresh partitions with new ext4 file systems on them.

I archived /mnt/lfs and did a quick install of an older slackware and did the partitions over and created new file systems with the older tools and extracted the lfs archive and I was good to go.

A bit of a rodeo but I'm back in business. From what I gather after reading a bit of google searches grub looks these newer file systems and sees features it doesn't recognize so it fails bummer. I'm hoping for a new grub release, this one could be a deal breaker for those using newer tools to create a new file system.

I actually tried building grub from git but I was missing dependencies and wasn't sure where to get them.

Did you have a problem with grub saying there were no valid file
    systems found?

    Yes. Also I found this fix for grub at the LFS site;

    https://www.linuxfromscratch.org/patches/lfs/development/grub-2.06-upstream_fixes-1.patch

Turns out that it requires patching for the new e2fsprogs-1.47.0 which I forgot I updated. So the git version is no longer required.

I was using the git version on a slackware-current live DVD. I didn't check the version but slackware current tends to be upto date.

When I did the git clone of grub it grabbed the source from master. When I ran ./configure it said I needed gnulib (if I remember correctly). I wasn't sure where to get that or how to build it, or if it would work so I bailed.

Sure wish I new about or saw the patch!

It's all good now though. Grub builds and runs fine with the patch applied.

It found a lot of dependecies on that machine and took quite a while to run compared to building in the lfs chroot.

Yep, I survived after jumping a small hurdle.

This issue will only affect folks who use the newest e2fsprogs to create a new file system. Rolling releases like archlinux are going to have to keep an eye out for that and get the patch applied to grub or they will have issues.

One nice thing about stable releases is that these things are solved before a new stable release.

What a pain but I think it'll be worth it.

Yep, I am just working on some depenencies for the desktop. I'm going
to have a go at getting xorg and friends installed tonight. If I
succeed I'll be building an xfce desktop tomorrow.

    +1

I just updated the kernel to 6.1.9 earlier today and I see
penguins here on my bios boot machine.

No love here yet but closing in on it. I currently have two legacy
machines I can try it out on. I figure by the weekend I *should* have a
working legacy boot but no promises on boot penguins as both are i915. I
may switch one to a uefi later.

I don't see the penguins until the screen goes blank (kernel
modesetting I think) and then they show up after that. I never saw
them until I added the nouveau module.

let the penguins live in south pole :)

I have the boot logo selected in ..
make menuconfig -> Device Drivers -> Graphics support
    It's right at the bottom.

    zgrep LOGO /proc/config.gz

kv-6.1.12? I'll have to go grab it.

    that was yesterday :=)

Yes, kv-6.2.1 is building as we speak.. ;)

so slack does work sometimes ? :)

Slackware works all the time. It is brilliant.

    I have penguins now.

I was just looking at the golded source and there is an ebuild in the contrib directory. Have you ever tried that? It may be old, I'm not sure.

I recently redid my partition scheme here and I added a space for gentoo on it. There is no file system on it yet but when I get some stuff out of the way I plan to do that and have a fresh look at gentoo.

    I knew you'd be on that! :)

One thing I noticed when I ran make oldconfig is that the nfs v4 server is enabled by default now. I was thinking of enabling that for a look but so far I have stuck with v3. Look like v4 is on now.

    Hey Alan!

    I knew you'd be on that! :)

I couldn't resist. On the plus side, everything is still working including the patched grub, although I am seriously thinking of switching back to the git grub just so I'm ready when it finally gets updated. I am guessing a new version isn't too far away.

One thing I noticed when I ran make oldconfig is that the nfs v4
server is enabled by default now.

My neighbour "He who is Paul" says that he was enabling all versions when he last used nfs. Like me he now uses sshfs instead since it is far less complicated to set up and use. I never used nfs that much way back when and quit looking at it back in the late 1990's.

nfs is still working as expected here. I haven't told either side to use v3 or v4 but they connect fine. There is no mention in the logs what version they use but it's happy whatever it is.

I have all of that installed but none of it configured. Maybe I should get to it.
