Right-Wing Lie of the Day 0018
“The Vice President has the power to reject fraudulently chosen
electors.” -- Donald Trump
The role of the vice president in the counting of electoral votes is limited
to opening sealed envelopes and announcing the final tally at the end.
Congress does have the power to challenge and potentially reject votes. Although the vice president is the president of the Senate, the VP's vote
only counts in tie-breaking situations.
Nothing in the Constitution, its amendments, or any relevant statute grants
the vice president the power to reject electoral votes.
Trump's assertion to the contrary was part of a coup attempt to retain power despite having lost the election, but Pence refused to go along with it. This led to the 1/6 insurrectionists shouting, "Hang Mike Pence!" outside of the Capitol.
