I say 'Crap'. *Anyone* cannot actually run a BBS with only a $10 investment.

Yup. That's because Lefties like Jeff and Lee live in a fantasy land where things like electricity, internet, etc are all provided for - by someone else.

They probably see things that way because they are still living in their mom's basement leeching off her house, electricity and internet.

Remember that idiot David Hogg who dissed the MyPillow guy and said that he was going to set up a company that did it better? How hard could it be? That didn't last long.

But to look at setting up a BBS today with modern hardware, something like a Raspberry PI anything should be fine.

But BBSs do many disk accesses, so you certainly want to store things on something other than the SD card - or the BBS will end up killing that pretty fast. So add a USB hard drive (spinning media). If you went with a Pi0, you'll need a USB hub too (powered). A Pi3 and up can handle 1 spinning 2.5" drive on one of the built in USB port.

Software is usually free. So that's a cost savings.

You'll need Internet access, but that will vary depending on the connection. Normal home internet connections don't have static IPs (or charge extra for that), so you'll need to pay for some sort of dynamic DNS service to keep a hostname that will change IP when your connection changes.

Then there's the time to set up and maintain the software.

Certainly more than a $10 investment.

All you have to do is say how you'll test it. But if you'd rather back down, that's fine with me, too.

WOW! The stones on this guy! \(@_@)/

Even when multiple people are telling you that you're being foolish,
    you still won't listen?

Lefties (want to) believe that they are the smartest people on the planet. Therefore they don't see the need to listen to anyone.

In the case of Google Cloud's free tier, they are.

They probably see things that way because they are still living in their mom's basement leeching off her house, electricity and internet.

    Nice try, but no.

Remember that idiot David Hogg who dissed the MyPillow guy and said that he was going to set up a company that did it better? How hard could it be? That didn't last long.

What has that to do with anything?

But to look at setting up a BBS today with modern hardware, something

That would be nice, but is not necessary. However, using Google Cloud's free tier, that's not even an issue.

    Indeed.

Not in the case of Google Cloud's free tier. And DuckDNS is free.

Then there's the time to set up and maintain the software.

It will take time, yes, but unless you're charging yourself for your own
time, that's not really an issue.

Certainly more than a $10 investment.

    Absolutely not.

I still haven't received any information on how this is to be tested. Why should I go through the trouble only to have them say, "How do we know what it's running on?"

    Ron;

I agree with most of your post, except this:

You'll need Internet access, but that will vary depending on the connection. Normal home internet connections don't have static IPs (or charge extra for that), so you'll need to pay for some sort of dynamic
DNS service to keep a hostname that will change IP when your connection changes.

To be fair, there are plenty of free dynamic DNS services. I'm using one myself.

    Enjoy your day!

They offer you an upsell program for a few bucks you get a lot more features/benefits.

The FREE thing is to get you in the door and many times the FREE thing is really all you need.

I'm not denying that happens at all but DuckDNS is donation based, and their answer to this question is:

"why make a free DDNS service?
because we can, because before we started we couldn't, learning is fun"

That's exactly the case with the free service I am recieving. I am required
to 'renew' my domain every 30 days, which really isn't much of an issue. Or, buy in, and get a bunch of features that I just don't need.
