• The different party programs

From Michael Mrak@2:310/31.4 to All on Tuesday, May 25, 2021 06:25:40

    Hello everybody!

What would interest me would be the party programs of the Democrats (now under Biden) and the Republicans (implicitly still under Trump, anyway). What goals are the two groups pursuing, what specific measures are they planning and do they intend to implement in the medium term in order to:

    - Eliminate the enormous economic damage of the COVID pandemic?
    - To help the groups of people who have fallen into poverty in the last 15 months?
    - Improve education for larger segments of the population (this varies greatly by state as far as I know).
    - Repair the country's infrastructure, some of which is in disrepair?
    - Eliminate the enormous tax inequity in the country.

Is there a comparison table somewhere that objectively documents what measures the two parties want to use to resolve these issues? Without cynically hammering away at the other faction.

And more specifically, what is the long-term vision of both groups?

    Michael

    - Eliminate the enormous economic damage of the COVID pandemic?
I have not heard any mention of this from either party. However, Biden is willing to raise taxes to pay for infrastructure renovation, while
Republicans seem adverse to raising taxes for any reason whatsoever.

    - To help the groups of people who have fallen into poverty in the last
    15 months?
Republican governors (including here in Texas) have recently started refusing the federal extended unemployment benefits, hoping to force people back to work. Democrats passed a huge COVID relief bill and tried to make two provisions of it -- food assistance and the child tax credit -- permanent. As far as I can tell, Republicans see this as "socialism."

    - Improve education for larger segments of the population (this varies greatly by state as far as I know).
Democrats have brought up the subject of free college, but Republicans adamantly opposed it. In general, Republicans tend to believe that college is not necessary for everyone, but will also tell you that if people want better jobs they need to make the effort to educate themselves.

    - Repair the country's infrastructure, some of which is in disrepair?
Trump talked big about this, but nothing ever came of it. Biden also talked
big about it, and appears to be taking concrete steps to make it happen (burdened, of course, by Republican opposition).

    - Eliminate the enormous tax inequity in the country.
That's a big one. Biden has proposed increasing taxes on corporations and the wealthy; Republicans have adamantly opposed this.

In general, my view is that Democrats are trying to make this a better
country at the expense of those who have become wealthy due to the opportunities that the country provides, while Republicans are very much in favor of maintaining the status quo (as conservatives are wont to do) because it's stacked in their favor.

Sounds like something a google search would turn up.

Well, after Google has been defined here in many places as left-left biased I would like to hear the points first hand. Can you name them?

They used to have duels. Yes, there are rules. You can find them
at Project Gutenberg, and download them for free. Probably the most
famous duel was between Secretary of the Treasury Alexander Hamilton
and Vice President Aaron Burr. The way that one went down was the
Vice President (a former war hero) was sitting down at a bar having
a brewski. Then the Secretary of the Treasury (who was a nerd) got
the nerve to challenge him to a duel. Both men were drunk, but only
one of them was a crack shot. So, the two gentlemen went outside
to settle their differences, each loaded with a single-shot pistol
of their own choice. Not to take advantage of his opponent, Burr
let Alexander take the first shot. Fortunately, nobody was hurt.
Except somebody's horse. Then Burr took aim, and fired his weapon,
hitting Hamilton right in the balls.

We all know what happened next. Hamilton bled to death, and Burr
was tried for murder. The jury heard the case, and acquitted Burr
    on all counts.

We honor Alexander Hamilton today by having his face on our paper
currency. And nobody honors Aaron Burr at all.

That was an interesting history lesson I hadn't heard as a European. Thank you for the historical review.

But what does this have to do with the party manifestos of Democrats and Republicans?

Well, you see, the presidential election ended in a tie between
Thomas Jefferson and Aaron Burr. So, after several hudred rounds
of fighting, the two of them decided to be partners, with Thomas
Jefferson as President and Aaron Burr as Vice President. So, to
keep themselves honest, that meant both gentlemen had to become
    Democrat Republicans.
