• Biden meets Putin

    Hello everybody!

A summit meeting between U.S. President Joe Biden and Russian leader Vladimir Putin will take place on June 16. This was announced today by the White House.

The meeting will be held in Geneva, Switzerland. It almost took place in my hometown Vienna. Vienna has often been a meeting place for geopolitically relevant conferences and there is also a UN office here.

A little history lesson: The Vienna International Centre with the United Nations Office at Vienna (UNOV) is one of four official headquarters of the United Nations, along with New York (UNHQ), Geneva (UNOG) and Nairobi (UNON).

    Hello Michael,

A summit meeting between U.S. President Joe Biden and Russian leader Vladimir Putin will take place on June 16. This was announced today by the White House.

Yay! The two of them want to make a deal! Biden will convince Putin
to return Crimea to Ukraine, and Putin will convince Biden to return
Alaska to Russia! Kinda like what Gorbachev and Reagan did.

The meeting will be held in Geneva, Switzerland. It almost took place in my
hometown Vienna. Vienna has often been a meeting place for geopolitically relevant conferences and there is also a UN office here.

And yet the UN headquarters is in NYC. Go figure.

    World Peace Headquarters.

Sure. Sorry, I forgot to mention that because it's probably known to everyone.

The UN is only as strong as the nation states that are members of it. Without (largely unanimous) decisions, it is incapable of acting. Depending on one's perspective, this can be seen as positive or negative.

But in a certain way, the UN is still without alternative, and especially in the humanitarian field it plays a strong role.

    Hello Michael,

And yet the UN headquarters is in NYC. Go figure.

Sure. Sorry, I forgot to mention that because it's probably known to everyone.

Should it be in NYC? Not all believe it should be. Good arguments
can be made to move it elsewhere.

A little history lesson: The Vienna International Centre with the

The UN is only as strong as the nation states that are members of it.

It is limited to nations resolving disputes between nations.
Has nothing to do with individual disputes.

Without (largely unanimous) decisions, it is incapable of acting.

The UN is basically a paper tiger when it comes to resolving
disputes between nations. What did it do to stop the fighting
between Israel and Lebanon back in the early 1980s? Nothing.
Why not? It was not capable of doing anything to end the conflict,
or anything to prevent future conflict.

Depending on one's perspective, this can be seen as positive or negative.

What is the UN capable of doing in regards to ending conflict,
or preventing conflict? Can the UN bring individuals to justice?
Or can individuals continue to act as tyrants regardless of what
    the UN says or does?

But in a certain way, the UN is still without alternative, and especially in
the humanitarian field it plays a strong role.

Who, or what, is going to enforce whatever the UN says or does?
