I do not blame him for walking away. And all New Yorkers should
thank him for allowing the Lt. Governor the time to prepare to take
over the job in two weeks, rather than having to rush things right

Somehow I doubt that. I think he just needs to set up the process to
stay in power while not actually being in power.

Personally, I think that the reason behind the resignation is the
nursing home deaths he caused and the subseqent coverup. There was too
much evidence against him. Now that he's resigned, no one is asking why
the DOJ dropped the investigation of the nursing home deaths.

The Left are kings of misdirection - which is easy when they control the
media.
