I don't think there is much doubt in the minds of most about this. He was trying to reach out to people outside of the base, using the same message,
and it was not the best approach.

his base could grow again, making it moot.

I don't think his base shrank all that much. Like Barr, I think that his base plus some moderates willing to give him a chance won him the presidency in 2016. I can't rule out that his base has shrunk, or that it may grow again,
but I doubt it will be more than it was in 2016. Except this time, and I
agree with Barr on this as well, the people outside his base who gave him a chance before but now consider him an "a******" will not be supporting
him.

They may not but, if the price of everything keeps going up, I'd not rule
it out. Honestly, unless no one else of any callibre runs against him, I
don't even see Trump getting nominated again.
