    Everyone,

Please note that this echo is for Zone 1 Sysops only. This should be treated as "restricted" in your mail-tosser, Areafix and BBS settings.

Please take a quick moment to examine your security settings for this echo and who exactly you are obtaining this from.

Only Vince is an invited guest. Other non-zone 1 systems should be immediately disconnected.

If I continue to see non-Zone 1 systems here other than Vince, I will permanently abandon this echo as an official ZC channel and move any further communication to Netmail threads going forward.

    Thank you.

When I imported this echo there was no indication it was sysop only.
I've now changed it to sysop only so you won't take your ball away and

Maybe, I just added what I pulled from my hub. At the time I don't
think I could find a definitive list of every Z1 and worldwide echo
that was "official" so to speak. TBH, I'm still not sure if there is
one :) I tried to do a best judgment when setting them up.

Him and Felten I feel are both single-handedly responsible for turning off a great many Sysops... as in, I get some newcomers or returning Sysops who
just restored their old board from floppies or backup or whatever so they get assigned a node number. After being flamed by the Dutch kludge-police in Fidotest, they then read the nonsense that is the Fidonews echo. They then

Yeah Fidonews is mis-tagged... open to everyone, but should have a disclaimer that if you're not European you will be subject to lectures about everything wrong with America. Presidents, politics, the military, sitcom laugh-tracks. All in the name of prolonging some stupid flamewar that died years ago.

Lee Lofoso is Bjorn Felten's strawman that popped up in Fidonet in the early 2000s when Bjorn was banned from the POLITICS echo by its then-moderator, Gary Braswell. Bjorn, along with a few others in Zone 2, do not believe in moderators, instead insisting that the rules do not apply to them. I am dealing with this in WIN95 with Bjorn and Wilfred van Veltzen.

This is an "open secret" in Fidonet for decades now.

Hahaha, that actually came up (sort of. It was suggested that they were the same person) in POLITICS again not too long ago. I found it odd how Bjorn went totally silent, and Lee masterfully avoided any part of the topic...

When someone tries a little too hard to deny that they had absolutely anything to do with it, no sir, not me, nuh uh, I wasn't even in town that night, I swear...

(Hell, I think I just came up with a possible article for the 'Gazette'! I should probably finish the first one, though...)

However, I would have to say from personal experience that Bjorn will indeed adhere to the rules of a moderated echo area, though I'm not sure why it's
such a problem in your case. Just today, I had the opportunity to remind him
of a rule he was blatantly breaking in the aformentioned cessp--uh, echo
area, and he immediately dropped the topic without complaint.

Not sure if Mike Powell over there is doing something different, or if Bjorn
is just trying to see what he can get away with with you, but he does know how to follow the rules, at least sometimes.

Or the Sysop who dies in his home and through a series of quirky Fargo-like events there seems to be an extended time until his system gets shut off, ie. his utility bills and rent were automatically paid from a bank account with funds automatically reloaded every month by social security. Guy had no
friends or family and neighbors were either on some vacation overseas or whatever that his whereabouts went unnoticed for a LONG time.

For me it was the ultimate "cooperative anarchy" to be trading banter on a system that was totally unmanned, nobody at the helm. We didn't know if it would crash or be turned off tomorrow, next week, next month.

And this is why I didn't push 'too' hard on certain exemptions to the nomination process. I definitely mentioned my concerns to my RC, but I didn't, uhm, 'stand my ground' on the issue.

As you say, we need to have experienced personnel on the FTSC. I'm not sure
if inexperienced people should be specifically excluded, though I would be
just as concerned if any party showed a bit too much interest in getting 'their' candidate onto the council.

I can certainly relate to this story. After I got dumped into the deep end, I was pretty quickly discouraged, and even seriously considered resigning my
node number, too. But, it isn't fair to single out just two people for an attitude that so very many people share! It appears to be a fairly common
theme throughout Fidonet, shitting on the new guy. I don't think it is
limited to any particular region or zone.

On the other hand, this same negativity can be a great motivator to get over the learning curve. At least, that was the case for me. I wasn't about to
just give up. I'm a little stubborn that way. If someone picks a fight with
me, well, even if I don't win it right away, I definitely get the win in the end.

often times, people will simply not be able to see the good in a person (or net) because the poop stinks so very much. And who wants to stay in a stinky, poop-filled room?

As always, it's all a matter of perspective.

And this is why I didn't push 'too' hard on certain exemptions to the nomination process. I definitely mentioned my concerns to my RC, but I didn't, uhm, 'stand my ground' on the issue.

I read some of the FTSC technical documents yesterday. I can certainly understand the requirement for operating your own node. But beggars can't be choosers, so I asked my guy to vote yes on all three.

As you say, we need to have experienced personnel on the FTSC. I'm not sure if inexperienced people should be specifically excluded, though I would be just as concerned if any party showed a bit too much interest in getting 'their' candidate onto the council.

The thing about inexperienced people running is "why" they would want to wear the hat of something technical. At the best its to understand things or help with grammar-checking documents and thats actually fair and reasonable. At the worst its because they seem to believe that the FTSC conjures up new standards or enforces them. It does neither and many people don't get this.

At the risk of making a bad comparison... FTSC can be thought of as an IT department. Productive things usually get accomplished when its just the tech-people working in the IT department.

When the department is overruled or interfered by marketing, sales or HR, things tend not to get accomplished.

Well, yes, exactly. The FTSC needs members, and as Nick mentioned, members
who are tech-savvy. That's why I didn't insist on a 'no' for one of them. Though I did get a bit miffed when I found out that abstentions are ignored...which means my concerns (and those of others too, considering the number of abstentions) were also ignored.

However, I'm not sure if I want to gripe about it any more. The guy knows
what he's talking about. And that really is the most important part.

The long and crazy lore of FidoNet has become my favorite part of it.
It's like playing Dwarf Fortress, where I'm just dropped in the present day and keep getting to read about all the strange history.

Fidonet has its own little society inside of it that is unfortunately lost
on recent members. It was really "barely controlled anarchy" in its heyday. Now it's much more subtle, moribund, and there's people who still wish for
zone wars and to be distruptive simply because they have a moribund life themselves and feel they have to try to exert control over others to make themselves feel important.

Most of the ne'er-do-wells you see here in Fidonet have been doing this
stupid stuff for decades. Wilfred van Veltzen is a recent addition to this "rogues' gallery" but he falls flat on his face as he does not have the
fire, nuance, or the vulgar "je ne sais quoi" of the older generation of
    fools. <G>

I have run my own FTN network, The Micronet Information Network,
successfully for the past 22 years and it's never had the problems Fidonet
has and for good reason. I stick around Fidonet as I have long-time friends here (most of whom are in Micronet as well) and I get a kick out of seeing these same fools doing the same thing decades later and not realizing how idiotic they are. Every time they post, I am grateful that I am not like
    that. <G>

Hahaha, that actually came up (sort of. It was suggested that they were the same person) in POLITICS again not too long ago. I found it odd how Bjorn went totally silent, and Lee masterfully avoided any part of the topic...

Like I said, it's an "open secret". :D

(Hell, I think I just came up with a possible article for the
'Gazette'! I should probably finish the first one, though...)

    My inbox is always open.

However, I would have to say from personal experience that Bjorn will indeed adhere to the rules of a moderated echo area, though I'm not
sure why it's such a problem in your case. Just today, I had the opportunity to remind him of a rule he was blatantly breaking in the aformentioned cessp--uh, echo area, and he immediately dropped the
    topic without complaint.

Bjorn, and several of the other usual suspects, are not stupid. He just
likes to start things to keep him busy. He and I have butted heads for
decades for no reason other than I am a proud American and have conservative political beliefs. However, as seen in WIN95, he does listen sometimes and
    can behave.

Wilfred van Veltzen is just being annoying for no other reason because
others are doing the same. What I find is that several of the more annoying Zone 2 members doing this are Dutch. Maybe it's a Dutch thing; I don't
    really know.

Not sure if Mike Powell over there is doing something different, or if Bjorn is just trying to see what he can get away with with you, but he does know how to follow the rules, at least sometimes.

Fun fact: I dumped POLITICS on Mike and he tried to give it back to me. I
said no. However, if Mike didn't want it anymore, I'd take it back just to piss off certain members of Zone 2 who insist I am trying to "usurp power" since I have taken over several echoes (11 at last count). What's funny is that I've elisted GOLDED but just not said anything...

Always me...fighting for the underdog! \(^_^)/
Aw hell, I just like playing Devil's advocate.

Some in Zone 2 cannot be reasoned with because they do not have reasoning skills nor do they want to listen to reason. It is both a cultural and a political aspect IMNSHO that I have learned over decades of dealing with
these people. Thankfully, they are a tiny but vocal minority in Fidonet and
if you don't have to deal with them, ignore them. Mention to them you're dropping them in your twit filter (even if you don't have one) and watch
them get angry and start bleating that twit filters are illegal in Fidonet (they aren't).

Maybe years and years ago when every Tim, Dick & Harry wanted to be on the FTSC and our numbers where a lot more than they are today, it made sense to hold to the rules. IMO with the state of Fidonet and our numbers, we should be willing to be more flexible (and possibly re-write|do away) with (some of) the rules.

As it is, finding people that are both willing and technically capable is rather difficult in 2022.

Of course it's (thankfully) not up to me, it was up to Andrew who seemed to hold a similar opinion.

really bad when I was elected net 229 NC.

I was part of Net 2424 that was "non regional" and offered FTP feeds to anyone who wanted it. I remember getting my mail via FTP and fed some of the local boards in and around Muskoka for a short time before they all started dropping like flies.

I lived in Calgary for a short time (2002-2003) and that's when I originally joined Net 229. I remember whoever I emailed (it might have been Nick?) said that they didn't care where I was located.

Net 229 today is mostly Canadians (all from Ontario or Quebec) with one person from Tennessee thrown in to add some smoky BBQ goodness into the mix. I'd love to see some boards from "down east" (NB, NS, PE or NL) added to the net.

There also appears to be no active boards located in Manitoba or Saskatchewan either, but they would fall under Region 17 I believe.

Not sure if Mike Powell over there is doing something different, or i Bjorn is just trying to see what he can get away with with you, but h does know how to follow the rules, at least sometimes.

Fun fact: I dumped POLITICS on Mike and he tried to give it back to me.
I said no. However, if Mike didn't want it anymore, I'd take it back
just to piss off certain members of Zone 2 who insist I am trying to "usurp power" since I have taken over several echoes (11 at last count). What's funny is that I've elisted GOLDED but just not said anything...

See, now *that's* a fun fact! Also fun is imagining the response if you DID take it back. I feel certain there would be a lot of vitriol hurled in your general direction from your...'fan club'...

Some in Zone 2 cannot be reasoned with because they do not have reasoning skills nor do they want to listen to reason. It is both a cultural and a political aspect IMNSHO that I have learned over decades of dealing with these people. Thankfully, they are a tiny but vocal minority in Fidonet and if you don't have to deal with them, ignore them. Mention to them you're dropping them in your twit filter (even if you don't have one)
and watch them get angry and start bleating that twit filters are
    illegal in Fidonet (they aren't).

I don't really approve of the dismissive attitude in this paragraph, but I certainly understand it. And...yeah, you're not wrong. Same thing happens if you hint at making a complaint through P4. Unfortunately for them,
*everything* in P4 is 'legal', or at least binding. Except, apparently, the FTSC nomination process...

And who's been the champion of this new flawed process? (o_O)

Things that make you go 'Hmm...' #420:
If someone thought rules needed to be changed, why didn't they bring it up *before* breaking them?

Sorry, I know I said I didn't want to gripe about it any more, but it's kinda stuck in my head...

With Ward Dossche being both Z2C and IC, any sort of PC filing would be, IMNSHO, worthless because it's the fox guarding the henhouse.

I think the ZC should be a person who does not hold a *C position at the same time as holding the ZC position. Double-dipping if you ask me.

As you say, we need to have experienced personnel on the FTSC.

And that's why I never said a word about their technical aptitude.

Was that typo intentional? If not, still funny! (^_^)

IMO with the state of Fidonet and our numbers, we should be
willing to be more flexible (and possibly re-write|do away) with (some
    of) the rules.

I fully agree that rulebooks need to have flexibility and adapt to current situations. My beef is with the timing. The rules were set in stone, as it were, from the moment of initiation of the election until its completion. The time for change is not *during* an election, it is before (or after). You don't change your crop in the middle of a harvest!

If this hadn't happened, I would have had no trouble at all with approving of all three. As I have always said, this is a purely technical objection.

Thanks for continuing to listen to my opinions on this matter.

all you ever heard on the radio at the time. Punk/ska was okay, it still takes balls today to put a rock band together with a brass section.

I became a huge Zappa fan at 12, 13... along with classical music. Was and still am a fan of noise-rock, leftfield, experimental... long loud 20+ minute guitar solos or constant screeching feedback noise is my favourite. The
louder and more obnoxious the artist or band, the more I love them. Speed metal is okay... Metallica before they got haircuts to look like yuppie dorks.

I can still listen to Lou Reed's Metal Machine Music. And enjoy all of it.

The sysop of RatHead systems back in the 90s left for school and left his
box running, susprisingly, for a hacked together box running Telegard and Front Door it kept going all semester.

For me it was the ultimate "cooperative anarchy" to be trading banter
on a system that was totally unmanned, nobody at the helm. We didn't
know if it would crash or be turned off tomorrow, next week, next
    month.

There was an interesting article in Wired about what happens when companies pull the plug on immersive worlds - people were milling around in a virtual world while the world went away. I'll see if I can find a link to it.

    Nick,

Last year I got carded buying booze... and *nobody* at this one place I work at knows my real age, they just assume I'm in my twenties.

Years ago, I went to this place in the former Missouri Pacific Railroad Station in Little Rock, Arkansas...named Slick Willy's (this was long before Bill and Hillary Clinton came to prominence <G>). I was going in there to
eat pizza, quaff root beer, and play pinball. Even though I wasn't going to order any beer, wine, liqour, etc. (I lost a close friend in college to a
drunk driver), they still carded me.

Then, when I went to buy some generic NyQuil recently, I got carded again, even though I have a salt and pepper beard, moustache, and hair. If being
over 60 doesn't qualify me, nothing will.

That also reminds me of the joke where this guy was to have surgery just before his birthday, and he'd have to be in the hospital on his birthday.
Well, his friends decided to cheer him up, so they sent a female stripper
to visit him. When she entered the room, it turned out that "all she had
on between her and The Lord was a fur coat". She shed that, and standing
there naked as a jaybird, told the guy "Happy Birthday!! I'm here to give
    you the Super Sex!!".

He looked at her, thought a minute, and said "I'll have the soup, please".
I see my cardiologist on Monday, and my birthday is the next day...I hope
    I haven't jinxed myself.

But, my area (Arkansas) is in a stormy weather pattern right now, with our tornado season in full swing. We get dry weather for 2 days, then we have thunderstorms (and BBS downtime) for 2 days. Then, the cycle starts all over again. So, I won't get to go out and eat on my birthday next week.

Golden Corral sent me a coupon for "a free birthday buffet"...BUT I'd have to buy one to get a free one. Robert Heinlein was right with TANSTAFFL.

    Shaun,

Nature is beautiful. Reptiles are gross. (o_-)

My late wife (and Co-Sysop's) nickname was "Snake"...while she
liked snakes, she respected them. Mine was "Gator"...not because
I'm originally from Florida (my team is the University Of Miami, in
Coral Gables, my late father's alma mater...NOT the Gators from
Gainesville (the University Of Florida). I will admit that Florida
State University (the Seminoles in Tallahassee), has an excellent
meterology department, and they designed a super ensemble forecast
model used by the National Hurricane Center for tropical cyclones.

As for the University Of Miami, "It's All About The U" |_|

It was founded in 1926, and while a private school (very expensive
tuition), it is far more than just sports...doing a lot of things in
    science, the community, and elsewhere.

The main reason I'm "the Gator" is that I can do "the baby alligator
distress call" (it's the same for baby crocodiles). However, you don't
want to do that at "a gator farm"...their parents will invite you over
for dinner...you'll be the main course. :P

Years ago, the "trifecta" would be with Miami, Florida, and Florida
State, playing each other. The one who won against the rivals would
have bragging rights in college football for a year.

Yes, I'd agree that would be "tampering with the mail". However, when I ran

went down to Santa Cruz for the week and learned a lot about UNIX while hanging out with some sysop friends at UC Santa Cruz, hanging out at night
at the boardwalk, and generally having a great time of it.

I returned to my apartment a week later, and as I walked in, heard FrontDoor doing it's tinny SOS morse-code sound and exiting because it was unable to initialize the modem. The batch file exited out, looped back, and 60 seconds later did it's SOS sound. As it had been doing, 24/7 for the last 6 days.

My walls weren't that thick, the people in the apartment next door must have been livid!

Sounds like those stores have gotten fined once too often...then again, maybe the rules are simply stricter in the southern half of North America.

Up here, any store that sells age-restricted products will have a sign that says "We I.D. under 25".

Except these new pot shops, oddly enough, which also sell perfectly legal
paper products and glassware. They act more like porn stores; anyone under 18 is strictly not allowed entry, let alone purchase. And yet, even they are pretty lax when it's clear you're over that age.
