Is there anything for installing drivers on windows 11? I've tried the XP/2K drivers that work under windows 10 32 bit, supposed windows 7 drivers that
were a mac image of a cd and supposed windows 10 64 bit drivers that weren't identified. I've got this working on my windows 10 32 bit system, but want
it on a windows 11 system as I'm not using that IP address to connect to my
bbs and would be able to identify dial-up users from sexpots from that
system.

there are lots of new motherboards that come with serial ports. just no cable bracket to bring the connector out to the case. those are fairly cheap on eBay though

That's certainly true. They do make USB/serial adapters that work, as
I've done it with an external USR modem connected to a modern computer
running Linux. The BBS software thinks it's talking to a normal serial
port.

That's a great idea. Almost every motherboard has that x1 slot doing
nothing. I'd thought about adding a NVME slot to mine.

For NVME SSD you have to use PCI-Express X4(+ adapter), so you must use one X16 slot.
If your MB is a little old, the SSD will don't boot, so you can't have here
the main OS, only for storage.
But now SSD are very expensive, not a good time to buy.

I think you can get a USB -> RS232 adaptor, but I'm not sure how the OS
handles that.

I don't know. I've already spent over $150 on the endeavor... Now I'd have
to get a serial card and new modem. What Modem should I get? It needs to be pretty small, I don't have much room left on my desk :).

Ok, ordered a Startech 56k USB modem with windows 11 drivers. It was $50.
The zoom was only $20... But only came with up to 2k drivers.

I use a "recent" 56K serial modem. Is OEM, ref "RS-232 56K Ext Modem",
another ref "308000". Small, work very well in VoIP, it use "recent" Conexant SM56D chipset. Even has a litle speaker (buzzer) inside to monitor phone line, rare theses days. (But had only 3 monitor LEDs)

I think you can get a USB -> RS232 adaptor, but I'm not sure how the OS handles that.

I am not 100% sure about how Windows handles those, either. In past, on linux systems, you had to be sure to plug them into a USB 2.x port. For whatever reason, they don't work well with USB 3.x and up. I found that out from experience. ;)

Otherwise, it seems to work just about as well as anything else would in an area where there is no copper, and where I am using what is provided by the local phone company (vs. getting my own ATA -- which I eventually plan to do).

I just got a startech 56k usb modem that seems to be working great, and tehre are drivers for. It's conexant as well.

I always use serial (RS-232) modems. No need for drivers and work on recent and old computers. ;-)

No, it can be PCIe v3.0 or v4.0 (speed factor) but they use 4x PCIe lines interface. Also, the adapter don't fit on X1 slot.

USRobotics Courier on a VoIP gateway with not one metre of
copper on our side. Your modem answers fine and we reached 14400
with V.42bis, but V.8 never completes between us, so V.34 never
gets a chance. One call in full - spectrum, signalling, packet
stats, audio replay, no login needed:

That is the 22:43 call: CONNECT 14400/ARQ/V32/LAPM/V42BIS,
carrier in 45.7 s, 2400 Bd and 1800 Hz both ways, -19.0 dBm in,
-11.5 out, 11898 characters read. One retrain, and it finished
at 12000 rather than the 14400 it started on. We ended it.

Your answer tone is ANSam, not plain ANS: the 2100 Hz carrier
has sidebands at 2085 and 2115 Hz, 20.2 and 20.6 dB down - clean
15 Hz modulation. Your modem announces V.8 correctly. Then it
stalls. From the 22:33 call, our V.8 left on:

10.5-13.5 s your ANSam
14.0-15.0 s you send JM on V.21 channel 2, we send CM on
channel 1 - the exchange begins
16.0-16.5 s you drop to an 1800 Hz V.32 carrier while we are
still repeating CM
21.5 s on both sides broadband, nothing agreed
27.5 s you go back to 2100 Hz and start over

That loops until our S7 expires - NO CARRIER at 64 s, while the
gateway cheerfully reports the call connected throughout.
Turning off V.34 alone changed nothing; skipping V.8 is what
works. ATS56=96 plus ATS54=240 and we land on V.32bis.

WHAT 24 CALLS SAY ABOUT THE LINE

13 connected, 54 %. Speeds 4800 ten times, 14400 three times,
twelve of thirteen with V.42 LAPM. Carrier up in 39.6 to 57.8 s,
median 42.0. Medians across all 24, to us / from us:

jitter p95 0.82 / 0.88 ms
jitter worst 2.08 / 1.25 ms
jitter RFC3550 0.06 / 0.39 ms
clock drift +17 / +35 ppm, ~5 ms over a 2 min call

One question ?
The thread says StarTech 56k USB, Conexant, hardware - but not
what is behind it. Real copper POTS, or an ATA or VoIP service
in the way? If your side is VoIP too, two G.711 legs back to
back would explain a lot about V.8, and that is a more
interesting result than either of our modems. And if they are
handy: what does your modem report after one of our calls, and
what init string are you answering with?

I don't think it was sexpots, I think it was rgtel. It had 127.0.0.1 in the blacklist. I added 127.0.0.1 to the whitelist and cleared out the blacklist. Let me know if you still have problems getting on, and if there are any init strings I should try to increase the stability. sexpots seems to use it's
own and overwrite the one in the device drivers.
