Nigel,
Yeah, the New Madrid Fault runs through Arkansas, and some of the mountains may actually be volcanoes.
Hmm, I never knew that. Let's not try to find out!
It actually enters Arkansas between Jonesboro and Blytheville, in
the northeast part of the state, moving southwest to the community
of Marked Tree. Then, it heads west to Enola (which is "alone" spelled backwards...and it's 35 miles north of Little Rock). Then, it heads
south through Little Rock to El Dorado, then into Louisiana.
There was a tremor several years ago at Enola, but we felt it in
Little Rock. In the last couple of weeks, there have been some sub 3.0
tremors near Greenbrier, just northwest of Enola.
I don't have the equipment to do D-Star stuff. In fact, I can barely
reach the local repeater here. I've got a dual band HT. It took me 8
years from getting my license to actually getting the radio. I renewed
and then got my General and still have the same HT lol. I really to
pass my Extra then get something that covers all the bands so biding my time. That said, I can't really justify spending a couple of thousand
on a radio I'm likely to barely use.
I just do mine on the computer, as I have no RF gear...and I don't have
any antennas due to the way we get lightning and storm damage around here
(I dread tornado season).
As for prices of gear, several years ago at Dayton Hamvention (before
it moved to Xenia), there was a "DC to Daylight" rig, for $20,000!! Now,
I could outfit a nice shack for that...but for one rig, that's just
overkill.

... Drink Canada Dry. Maybe you can't, but it's fun trying.
