• back up before upgrading

back up your configuration files before every upgrade, *no exceptions*

a single bad update can overwrite settings that took months to tune and a five-minute copy job is the cheapest insurance available

    we have all been there

I use a backup system called burp (backup and restore program). It's free, currently supported, fast and reliable. I have a VPS in another country and backup my BBS nightly.

For 30 euros a year I get 512gb of storage, 1.5tb bandwidth, 1vcpu and 1gb of ram which is plenty.

It backs up by itself early in the morning so any config changes I make that day are automatically saved. You can tell his how many days/weeks/months to keep backups for and all kinds of stuff. Highly recommended.

It'll use VSS on windows and good 'ol librsync for Linux.

I run my BBS' (yes plural) in Proxmoxx VM's, I use Proxmoxx Backup server to back up the VM's to a 24TB UNAS Pro7 Nas, that in turn gets backed up every other day to a Synology NAS I have which has 45TB. The Synology gets backed up to both a external drive and a UGREEN NAS at my sons house both backups run on opposite days.. So I think I got it covered at least for now..

No I really don't... LOL My son talked me into the VPN into his house and vice versa, he uses the VPN so when I have issues, he can log in and do what needs to be done, he is the IT specialist in my family. I just do things by the seat of my pants!!
