• how did you name your board?

As a lifelong guitarist, I used to tune into WDHA-FM 105.5, a northern New Jersey rock station. Before commercial breaks, they’d play a long block of music branded as a "non-stop Jersey Jam." Working for an ISP back in 2000, I realized the station hadn't claimed the name, so I registered JerseyJam.com for $100.

I turned the domain into a web-based classifieds forum where musicians could connect, complete with a monthly artist spotlight. The site grew incredibly popular—you can still see its original layout on the Wayback Machine—but I eventually took it down when I had kids and no longer had the time to maintain it.

I held onto the domain for decades. When I got into retro computing in 2025, I knew I wanted to run a BBS. Jersey Jam was the perfect name to resurrect, allowing me to serve the music community once more, this time through a blend of retro charm and modern BBS connectivity.

did you name yours after an old board you used to call, an inside joke, something from a movie or game, or did you just smash some words together that
    sounded cool

i'm always curious how people land on these names because some of
them are genuinely clever and some are just chaos.

let's hear the stories, good or bad

My domain name was the result of having been on Prodigy in the late 90's where my
wife would log in to view the 'Cross Stitch' forum and a few other hobby-related ones as
well. hobbylinebbs.com seemed like a good one to continue the theme.

I called it The Hobby Line! BBS (although I don't remember why I added the explanation
    point).

I ordered the DOS version of Wildcat from Mustang Software in Bakersfield, CA and they
have since been taken over by Santronics located in the Miami, Fl area and it was layer
    renamed to Winserver.

Because I had a hobby-related theme, I created HobbyNet network and had local BBS's
call in via modem to carry the feed.

When I thought about my board, I wanted all the message groups I could find, and did a pretty good job at that. When I wanted to stuff it full of text files, a bunch of downloads (but I don't think I'll ever have as many as he who is not to be named), basically...I'm the End Of The Line, you don't need to go any further to get everything you need from a BBS.

I may have falled short, I dunno. I am no ansi artist to I have really basic menus compares to a lot of great boards out there, but I hope to compete in another way.

I did run a BBS previously but it was very short lived called Maverick BBS because Dallas Mavs were my team.

Back in England I ran Modem Mania which was on and off, mostly off. I thought of using that but who the heck uses modems any more?

Seems reasonable. I'm always open requests from users for new stuff. Some I implement, some is just stupid. I try to keep ahead of stuff implemented in Synchronet like the MAME atuff, Doom and Duke Nukem, but it's mostly a novelty.

One somewhat unique thing I have is a "Beat the Intro" It requires Syncronet 1.10a or higher nightly build. You get upto 10 seconds intro for a song and you press a key when you think you know, and type in the artist and title. The quicker you stop the song the more points. You can get hints which adds to your time and 3 levels of difficulty. You can pick from decades and UK or US charts or a big mix. I may eventually do genres but we'll see.

I have never been artistic. I can't even draw matchstick men.

Yes, I know. That's why I have 4 modems attached to my board.
