i think it was before i started a bbs, but i lived a long way from bbses so i had to rely on calling 1-800 sites, just to get connected! the cost back then to call out was outrageous esp on a 2400 baud modem lol

One year after my Prodigy subscription expired, I started my own BBS. I incorrectly said
before that it was in the late 90's. It was actually the late 80's. I had never called ANY
BBS's prior to that. But I guess you could say that Prodigy was the first I called.

My 286 Packard Bell came with an internal 2400 baud modem. I added 3 more external
28800 and 56k modems, 1 of which would auto dial to a local ISP so I always had
internet access. All of this on a DOS machine!

I could log on locally and still have 3 more users online at the same time. The only
problem was that all of us were sharing a rather slow internet connection. Mostly they
were posting messages or playing Door games.

I ran HobbyNet with other local BBS's but I couldn't afford to get into Fidonet back then.
It would have involved a near zone phone call which would have cost me more money.

I lived in the south end of Broward county near Miami. My HobbyNet was carried by
systems throughout all of Miami-Dade county and as far north as Palm Beach county.
