regularly copy old files and logs to separate storage before drives fail

I agree with you, but don't follow that rule of thought unfortunately.. Back in 1996 when my Lt Kernal HD for the C64 died, and I was burnt out, I took my backups (3.5 disks, approximately 65 of them) and tossed them in a box and that box went into my NY garage along with all of my Commodore hardware. Fast forward 20 years, I am moving into a new home and didn't want to take all of my museum computers (bad move, I should have kept it all), and gave those backup disks to a former partner of mine and he took them to see if they were any good, the disks had the only copy of a running Image BBS v2.0 in existence... He was able to image them and get everything off of them. Luckily for us he was able to do that. I agree back it up all to HD's, DVD's, CD's whatever.. I use a greaseweazel to backup my stuff now that is on floppy disks. I am still working on the 300 Commodore disks, and after they are done, the 500+ PC disks..

I know the feeling about SD Cards.. I was running a BBS back in 2018 (Commodore 64 BBS) on a uIEC/SD from Jim Brain, and the card went bad. Luckily for me, I had made a .bat file which backed up the entire card on a PC which took all of about 30 seconds. So I backed it up daily, pop it out, pop it into a PC and bang backed up. When that card went bad, I formatted a new one, created the partitions then copied the files back on took less then an hour.. Jeez.. LOL I also know what you mean about being good at building a BBS from the ground up, with all of my programming for Image, I can set one up completely from boot to main prompt in probably 10 minutes! LOL
