    BOTH countries went black about the same time, even
    though their grids are not really connected. This
    kinda makes the case for some kind of sabotage.

    Took about 10 hours to get maybe half the power back
    on in (much of) Spain. Meanwhile NOTHING worked ... no
    phones, no fuel, no refrig for the food, no trains, no
    planes, no banking, no net. There were panic runs on
    the food stores - empty shelves where the non-perishable
    items were. Old transistor radios were the only way a
    lot of people even knew what was going on.

    I'm sure Vlad was laughing all day.

    They wouldn't dare do this to Trump so he's removed all cyber attack precautions to save up for the big tax cut!

    The notion of secure communications has been known for a long
    time. Along with the notion of making secure communications
    insecure. Computers were invented after breaking codes was
    important in the war.

    With computers came to ability of unbreakable codes. Therefore
    the USA outlawed effective computer encryption so we could break
    codes as easily as possible. That has been the overriding concern.

    Computer codes are done in software. Hardware encryption is an
    order of magnitude faster, therefore subject to endless export
    controls. We could make a PC with encryption circuits embedded in
    hard drives that make the devices completely unreadable without a
    key. That would make your data far safer. And it would make
    police seizing laptops irrelevant because they cannot read all
    those nefarious criminal secrets.

    NSA is devoted to preventing secure computers so it can crack
    computers. They know hackable flaws that they leave secrets until
    a criminal finds the flaw and hacks for criminal profit. They
    also force installation of back doors in communication hardware
    which are available for criminal exploits.
