Now that this sensitive information - including Social Security
numbers - has been disseminated, it is possible it will give

In any case, if the story is even half true - and
I've seen it repeated on a number sites foreign
and domestic now - yer SS number CANNOT be used
as Real ID anymore at the very least. Complete
re-issue is recommended ... but how long until
THOSE numbers get snatched ?

Hmm ... 9 digits ... that's up to 999,999,999
people. US pop is about 375 mil give or take so
there's room for a complete re-do - but only
ONE complete re-do.

Bear in mind all the office software - databases
and forms and such - that all INSIST on the current
format and will scream error otherwise plus the
underlying DBs that have all reserved 9 digits
worth of space for SS nums. This is all through
govt and industry. It'd ALL have to be re-done
from the Lotus-123 DOS spreadsheet some may still
be using up to all the Big Govt stuff.

Replacement ? It'd have to be some kind of biometrics
at minimum - pref with a 5-digit PIN code attached.
Of course all those people who mysteriously can't
possibly get a voter ID card won't go for THAT
either. Oh, and what about older people, aside
from Stars with megabuck docs, who *really* don't
look like they did at 20 ? And how do you keep
the biometric DB safe ... ?

And currently it's being reported all over the place from tech journals to the mainstream media.

And SS numbers are never reused. So when someone dies, that number is not at some point given to
someone else.
Supposedly we have another 50 years or so, at the current rate, before we run out of numbers.
Also some of the reporting is a bit confusing because they conflate number of records stolen and
number of SS numbers implying that ever record stolen contains an SS number and that is false.

Most financial institutions require or suggest 2 factor authentication usually involving an email
or mobile phone number.
If the bad guys have this information it is possible to clone your phone number, usually a social
engineering call to the provider or a visit to a busy phone store where the employees are not
careful, at which point it's game over as with all the other information they drain your bank
accounts and so forth.
Or worse, they steal your identity and rack up debts, crimes, money laundering scams and so forth
in your name.

This stuff is frightening.
