I'm trying to get a modem working with XP on a rebuilt PC (ASUS
A7V8X-X).
The machine has a swappable disks and the 'old' disk has 98se
installed and on that the external 'standard' (i.e. not soft) modem
work fine.
A new disk has XP newly installed and the modem will not connect to
the ISP. It is using XP's default 'standard' modem driver so no HCL
issues. The error reports that the COM port is mis-configured or
already in use. I've double and triple checked the port settings and
they seem fine. Numerous re-installs of the drivers and a re-install
of XP later im here :)
Under XP the modem shows some communication is going on soon after
booting, even before the system tray icons are shown. About once a
second the RD/SD start flashing under XP. They dont on the working
98se.
I've settled on the COM 1 port being in use by something. I halted
all the processes I can and only system process are left.
There is no additional software installed that 'should' be using the
COM port that I know about, no voice-ware, fax-ware, etc.
The machine is a friends and has a few legit games installed but
nothing running. I've run Add-Aware and ASUS PC-cillin (ASUS virus
s/w), it also has ASUS hardware probe, but the problems occurs with
these stopped under XP.
Does anybody have any clues ?
Is there anyway under XP to find out what is using the COM ports ?
thanks in advance
Martin
