• Removing Win98 Startup items

In Win98 one can disable unwanted Startup programs by going to Run/Regedit/Startup and unticking the boxes. Eventually there are a number
of items in the list that are never going to be used again. Is there a way tidying the list by removing these items permanently?

It is Run/Msconfig/startup and unticking the boxes not Run/Regedit/Startup.
I believe this is a typo.
To delete those from unused entries from startup, try regcleaner

Some are stored on the hard drive as
    "c:\windows\start menu\programs\Disabled Startup Items".
Others are stored in the registry in HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run- HKCU\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run-
Note the minus sign at the end of the keyname.
