  • High (80-90%) CPU usage on W98

    I have a 1989 Dell Dimension XPS T500MHz w/ 512MB RAM, running Win98. Recently, the
    system has been extremely processor bound, as demonstraded by System
    Monitor (Kernel Proc Usage tends to "redline"). I have been unable to
    identify the culprit, but a CTL-ALT-DEL does shows tasks by the name
    of "ccd", "cfd" and "mdm". When I kill these tasks (usually the are
    "not responding"), the perfromance does improve. I have searched high
    and low in documentation and on the net, trying to identify what these
    tasks are. They do NOT appear in the msconfig "Startup" list.
    Anybody knows what they are, how I can stop them from coming up and if
    there is any detrimental impact if I kill them.

    First hints indicate:
    ccd: no idea. CCD camera driver?
    cfd: spyware
    mdm: machine debug manager (part of windows, but usually
    not needed)

    Try searching your harddrive for ccd.* , cfd.* and mdm.* ,
    and try renaming what you find.

    "spybot search and destroy"

    There are a few things I would point you towards doing with it too -
    first of all, click the "online" tab, search for updates, and download
    them - you can ignore the skins, they`d just make it look different...

    Under the Spybot S&D tab, there`s an "immunize" button - do it :-}

    Under the Tools tab, there`s a "hosts file" - download the S&D hosts file
    - it will block spam adverts from known malicious advertisers who install
    crap on your system (it will point the adverts to an internal IP address
    on your machine, so they won`t download)

    Finally, click on the "check for problems" (or the Spybot S&D tab, then
    Search and Destroy) - it will highlight known spyware and certain other
    types of data for deletion automatically. Any it doesn`t tick, although
    it could potentially be used to track your movements, are nothing to
    worry about too much (ie. last file played in Windows Media Player)

    For your own peace of mind, I would recommend running it maybe once a
    month.

    Make sure you have an up to date virus checker too.

    If you're using Internet Explore, that is a huge entry point for
    spyware. I had to stop using it, because certain websites were just
    having a field day with my browser. IE will do most anything that any
    website wants it to do, including installing spyware. I had caught one
    of those "Toolbar" things.

    I`ve experienced the same myself in the past despite trying to deny the spyware install rights.

    I use Opera as much as possible now, and have IE locked out in my
    firewall unless I find a page I *really* can`t get going under Opera (ie.
    by spoofing the browser ident). If the site is that bad, I email them to
    ask them to employ webdesigners who are able to write cross-platform
    code, and point out that I can`t spend any money with them as I can`t
    access the site properly.
