Allthough the BBS does need the Alpha Index e.alpha, this is not your
problem. The symptom of a corrupt or mission alpha index is users not being able to log in by HANDLE (but user ID is okay).

the e.alpha file contacts a lookup of user handle to ID. Since the User
file is a REL file, it can only access records by a record #. So it needs something to match record # to say JOE USER. If typed the file would look
    like this

    1 RUG RAT
    2 JOE USER
    3 ETC

If I rememeber correctly the large # of user files is normal the first time
you run IMAGE 1.2, and I Belive but could be mistaken the number of users
is stored in the e.data file, it has been a very long time since I have run IMAGE

Since you have to log on in order to execute a +. file, something else is causing the lockup. Sounds like one of your other files is corrupted, or perhaps your modified +.modem file is tweaking something.

    Hello,

I am trying to set up an Image BBS. I am testing in VICE so that I
can customize it while I am away from my real Commodore, which is more
often then not. I've found Image BBS 1.0 and 1.2A upgrade at www.portcommodore.com. I got 1.0 working, but it didn't work until I
removed E.SAY and E.SAY (smaller). But after removing, 1.0 works
fine. I had to use 1650 or 1660 modem file to make it work in VICE on Windows. It's OK, I don't need to do anything but log in locally yet.

Well after I got 1.0 working just fine, I wanted to upgrade to 1.2A.
But when I followed the instructions, one of the first things I was
supposed to do is run the utility "+.alpha/ind". But it did not come
with the 1.2A upgrade disk found at www.portcommodore.com. As a
result, when I boot up the system, it shows 10,200 users while booting
and then after it does modem init and starts to flash "Set time" then
the screen turns grey and it freezes. I've tried many things (even
writing a custom +.MODEM file that basically works as no modem) and
never could get past this. I really think that maybe the data is not
1.2A compatible because I never ran the +.alpha/ind program before
    upgrading to 1.2A.

In my searches, I've found references of 1.2 that supposedly came as a
full version. The version I found was a 2 disk version of 1.2, but it
was corrupted. If this is true, and 1.2 full exists I would think
maybe I would have a lot better luck using this.

Does anyone have 1.2/1.2A of Image BBS? Or the +.alpha/ind utility?
Or know how otherwise know how to get this to work?

Also, if you have support files and games not found on
www.portcommodore.com, I would be interested in those as well. Going
to start a telnetable Image BBS very quickly, and any help would be
    highly appreciated!

    Thanks,

    Tommy
