Alot of C64 games (98%) use joyport #2. So in VICE make sure you have
your PC joystick assigned to C64 port #2 in the Settings->Joystick
    menu.

BTW, if you have any other emulation concerns (setup of emulator etc.)
the comp.emulators.cbm newsgroup would be better for posting those
types of questions to (people here tend to have the real thing). If
you have any non-emulation C64 concerns (ie programming, discussing of
software that runs on a C64, etc.) then by all means stick around ;-)

    Good luck!

    Thanks in advance.

Remember to map the keys (ie. Keyset A) to the correct joystick port
(ie. Port 2) and turn OFF the other joystick port as well. I found
some games acted funny unless the other port was turned off.
I use the cursor keys and CTRL for fire, frees up the rest of the
    keyboard for any other input.

I don't have a joystick or gamepad to use, but I want to buy one just to
play some of these games again. Can you recommend a brand/model which will work with VICE? I am assuming it should not be a newer USB type joystick, right?

BTW, if you have any other emulation concerns (setup of emulator etc.)

Great, thanks, I'll check that newsgroup out : )

Most any standard PC joystick or gamepad will. I have a Gravis Gamepad
hooked up currently and am running Win98. As for USB joysticks... not
    sure as I don't have any ;-)

No problem and have fun! :-)

I haven't used VICE so I don't know if it's DOS or Windows based or
what. I have, on the other hand, written software for use with game
devices on Windows (both DirectX and the Windows API). If VICE is a
Windows application then any gamepad or joystick will do, be it USB or gameport. I find most of the joysticks overkill these days so I'd
recommend a digital gamepad such as the Microsoft SideWinder - they're
dirt cheap (about £15 in the UK) and work a treat with older style games.

    Regards,

    Carl.
