• Using Internal 1571 in 128D-CR with Star Commander?

Okay, I came across a few .d71 files on the 'net... and found the POKE
on sta.c64.org to allow the 1571 to be removed from the serial bus so
that Star Commander can use it.

But I'm either doing the sequence wrong, or it's not disconnecting.
Star Commander locks up when I try:

Turn on PC, go to DOS
Turn on 128D-CR in 40 column mode, enter POKE from sta.c64.org in 128
    mode
    Begin Star Commander

1571 is never found. Setup was previously used for 1541, but cannot
get into config to change this (unless I start up with 1541 and change
it manually, then start again.... didn't think of that til now)

Am I missing something, or is there something wrong? I am successfully
using Star Commander with 1541-II and 1581 so it's not the cable...

    Ho James,

I think, you misinterpreted this sentence from the documentation:

"This decouples the Commodore machine from the common serial bus, by
switching the CLK line to high."

The POKE "removes" the C128 from the bus, which "claimed the rights" as
    bus master before.

This may be, because the 1571 was booted into 1571 mode on the C128D
instead of 1541 mode. Please check the drive configuration of the Star Commander. Look out for the drive configuration type "1571->1541"
(<STRG>-<F9> , <F5> , Section "Disk type"), that may be best suited for
    your issue.

I don't think this is the correct procedure. I'd rather try the following:
    - turn on PC, go to DOS
    - turn on 128DCR in C64 mode (C= key pressed) and enter POKE
    - run Star Commander

    or:

    - turn on PC, go to DOS
    - run Star Commander
    - turn on 128DCR and enter POKE

The problem is that in 128 mode, the machine wants to boot from the drive,
and if SC has not been started on the other side, the bus is in an illegal state. You can circumvent this by either using the first method (preferred, because you seem to have problems when running SC with the drive not properly configured) or the second one. I think I tried #2 several times and never had problems, but I think you should start with #1, it's foolproof.

1571 is never found. Setup was previously used for 1541, but cannot

If you use a lot of different drives, you should create shortcuts for the drive database (CTRL-F10) and you should configure the Commander in a way
that it doesn't access the drive immediately when you start it, i.e. don't display an external drive panel at startup! I remember the 1571 doesn't like some commands sent to a 1541, but this should not happen with recent versions of SC, unless you have a parallel cable selected in the setup.
