• Need help identifying a cart, and finding a manual for it...

    Hi,

I just won an auction for some C64/128-stuff. Among the items was a cart
that has the following written on the label:
Modem Converter for Commodore 64 & 128. And a switch labeled Hayes and 1670.

It's probably a RS-232 interface for the Commodore, but does anyone have anymore info about it? And any instructions to its use?

I've got a picture of the cart at:

    Thanks for any help!

If it plugs into the user port, then it's most likely simply a line level converter, so there'd be no drivers or anything to use it (iirc, RS232 is +/-12V, but the user port only puts out 0-5V). Simply use the kernal RS232 commands (device #2), or something like over5, to use the port.

    Hi again,

Hmmm... It seems that that it wasn't allowed to link directly to a
    file on passagen.se.

    Well, surf to:
    http://hem.passagen.se/zeela/files/

and click on NewCart.jpg to see the image.

I know exactly what this is .... and White Flame is right ... there
are no drivers ect. for it.

It is an early Network adapter for the C=64..... believe it or not there
was such a thing waaaaay back then as a LAN (local area network) using
the C=64.... we used to have 5 C= 64's networked together in the auto
parts store I worked in when I was "young and restless"

    Because of the "non-standard" RS-232 ( modem port ) on the C= 64 these
kind of cartridges were made to convert the port to "standard" RS-232 (
so to speak).... the reason was to be able to link the "dumb terminals"
to the hub using a "standard" cable ( the 25 pin DIN plug ) They were basically a "deluxe" null modem , that you could use high quality cable
    with for long run's.

Some had a switch ( like yours ) to either be used with standard Hayes protocol or as a C=ommodore specific 1670 modem "emulator". It all
depended on how the host program was written to communicate with the "satellite" or "dumb" terminals..... most used Hayes because it was
    faster.

They also used these type of interfaces for networking C=ommodores in
schools and stuff. Keep your eyes open , maybe you can find another one similar and network two of your C= 64's together just for grins.

BTW , you could "probably" use this adapter with a "ibm" type
external modem with no problem in the Hayes mode, but it looks like you
would still only have the equivelent of a 1670 modem ( 1200 baud ) even
if the "ibm" modem was like 56 K baud....... but ya never know....
could be fun to experiment with
