• SSD upgrade to i7 (2012)

The package arrived with the OWC 1TB SSD and install kit.

My basic plan is to do a discrete backup of apps and docs etc. from the
sys HD to another offline spinner so that I'm not relying on TM.
(Currently at 10.14.6 (Mojave)). I'll attack this Saturday.

Before 'gluing' the LCD/BL assembly back on I'll boot the machine to see
if I can get to recovery mode.

Shut off, glue it up and then boot into recovery again and install BigS
via the web. Then recover from TM and/or the offline copy.

    Any suggestions?

(Irony is that I'll probably be buying an MBA or MBP in the coming weeks
for a project that will require a lot of travel. I sold my company MBA
in June and replaced it with a Mini. Naturally I now need a laptop).

Big Sur is not currently available via Internet Install.

Having just restored a machine I would recommend you boot of the TM
drive and restore your system You'll be back exactly where you were.

    Strange. Maybe by the weekend.

Or if there's a firm date for it I'm willing to wait. Wishful thinking?

But I can still DL it and make an installer (?)

Well, not exactly. I have some excluded folders such as the VM's for
Windows and Linux and some others. About 120 GB worth.
IAC, I'll be doing a 'checklist' exercise before starting to be sure
nothing can go wrong, go wrong, go wrong ...

Another issue here is that attempts to update Mohave to Catalina have
failed, so "being exactly" where I am would not be a good thing if
whatever ails my system now gets 'planted' onto the new drive.
