This would sound like a reasonable suggestion except in my experience Verizon doesn't actually know that there is an OS X and will want you to connect via MacPOET which, of course, will not work in OS X.
Check the current minimum requirements for Verizon DSL service, now they
list OS X as the minimum and do not even mention OS 9. As best as I can
tell, they are not including MacPOET on the starter CD anymore. But they
have been doing a major revamping of their support site lately, so many
of the downloads that used to be there are not findable. Since they
decided to link up with MSN for content, the visible Mac support has
decreased quite a bit. Hopefully the phone support still has people who
can supply Mac help.
If you're using PPPoE, you'll need a name and password in OS X's
Network control panel. They can help you with that. Once you've got
that, you'll sail right in.
PPPoE and DHCP are not the same thing.
