• Connection-speed woes...help?

Using OS 10.1.5 on an iMac, with a 56K modem

When I was using OS 9.2.2, my Earthlink connection speed was generally somewhere between 45K and 49K. I believe 49333 bps was the fastest speed
    ever attained.

I switched to using OSX in recent months, and have noticed that my
connection speed is now usually around 24K-26K! 21K is not uncommon
either, and ditto for *19K*. And when I "luck" into hitting a speed in
the lofty 30s, the connection seems unstable and prone to drop within 10 minutes or so.

Any suggestions what the problem might be? How to correct it? I have my
modem properly selected in the Network preferences, as far as I know.
I've also experimented with various dial-up numbers, to no avail. I'm
really feeling this speed deficit, when websurfing and
    attachment-downloading.

Maybe a weblink to show me that the modem initialization string is
    correct?

    JB:

My father in law always connects at 23K or slower. Thats Earthink not
OS X. But check your modem scripts just to be certain

Exactly what do you have specified for the modem?

Similar problems... with another ISP, not Earthlink.

    What I'm seeing:
    - Slower connections
    - takes longer to establish the connection... 30 seconds instead of 10 seconds. Also takes 30 seconds for the damn thing to disconnect, was 5 seconds.
    - From time to time the connection just stops, hangs for 30 seconds, then continues.
    - Dropped connections.

    I see the problems with a TiBook, 550MHz, OS X 10.2.3

The old (better) situation was a Pismo, OS 9.2

What's up? Is the modem inferrior in the TiBook? Bad/different script? Or what?
