Many ISP's are blocking Port 25 to make you use their SMTP server from your connection. This helps prevent SPAM.

So, for example, if my ISP is istop.com and I use a connection through sympatico.ca, I would have to use the sympatico.ca SMTP server as they block access to Port 25 which would normally get me to my ISP to use the SMTP server at istop.com.

That probably wouldn't result in the "SMTP authentication error" that
the OP got, though. The error would probably say something to the
effect of "unable to connect to server".

The stars are there for obvious security reasons. I did check with my
server admin. It is a shared mail server, so the @********.com has to
be there to state which site's email you are logging into. My ISP is
AT&T (SBC Indiana region), but my mail is provided through the company
that I work for. My boss has a different home ISP, and it doesn't work
    there either. Thanks!

That makes it sound more like an issue with the company's firewall.

However, you should be able to send mail out through your ISP's SMTP
server; you shouldn't need to use the company's server for this.
