• [9.x] Update too big for ZIP 100. Now what?

    Hello,

I still need to make a bootable ZIP 100 disk, and I wanted to make it OS 9.2.2. Someone posted to ask why I don't just install the system as
normal, so I tried that. Turns out the disk doesn't have enough space
(even after deleting everything from it) for the update. I chose a
minimal custom installation, and still no luck.

My question, therefore, is: Is it possible to create a bootable ZIP 100
using OS 9.2.2, and if so, what all do I need to manually copy onto the
disk? Ideally, I'd like to add DiskWarrior and TechTool Pro, as the
point of creating the disk is so that I can run the utilities on all drives/partitions.

I've always had success with this up to and including OS 9.2.1. I can't
boot from the disk now that I've updated my computer to 9.2.2, as it
doesn't see the disk as bootable.

The ZIP is now completely erased, btw.

If anyone can help, I'd greatly appreciate it! Any e-mail replies are
welcome at "thustar at yahoo dot com."

    Thank you and happy computing,
    Eric

    Hi,
I had 9.2.2 runnign on one machine and copied the system folder (i
forgot the name - SUSE nowdays- but the folder with the happy mac face
on the 'root' of the disk) to a usb stick. You can ommit all subfolders
    you do not need.

    Regards,
    Armand

Well, I do know that placing Finder and System (suitcase) into a folder
will bless it as a system folder, but there must be some other essential components. I'll just have to experiment.

    Please keep the advice coming!
    Thanks,
    Eric

The easiest thing would be to buy an old OS 9 CD and boot from that.
You might need to buy a CD drive, of course, if your Mac is old enough
that it doesn't have one. If all you want is an emergency boot disk,
then it doesn't matter it it's 9.2.2 or not.

Other'n that, just copy the System and Finder to the ZIP disk and try
booting from that. Since this is a bare-bones minimalist thing, you
don't need much else by way of extensions and such, so you should be
able to make this very small. You can add extensions as necessary.

Well, I didn't go to that extreme, but I'll try just about anything at
this point. I want to have a removable with my crucial utilities on it
so that I can use them on any OS 9 machine, as well as my G4/450.

    Thanks,
