Yes and no. Yes, it can connect to any wireless router as long as they
are talking the same language. 802.11b is the most widely used
protocol. 802.11g is the new kid in town (Airport Extreme) and is
backwards compatible. No, you don't need the base station.
I'm using a Linksys BEFW11S4 (802.11b) to connect a G4 (Quicksilver)
and a clam-shell iBook, as well as my G3/G4 hybrid via an ethernet
cable. I will be connecting soon another Mac and two Wintel boxes.
I can access my network from across the street from my neighbors garage
so security is necessary. Disable SSID broadcasting, password protect
the router, and do MAC address filtering as your basic security
measures. You might even want to look into WEP as well.
