• How do I give my Mac a network device name?

When I say "network name" I don't know a more correct term. At home
I've got a Netgear cable modem, and in the MAC filtering page I can see
the machines which are connected. Both my Windows machine and my kids
Nintendo DSes identify themselves in the Netgear "Device Name" field
(the Windows machine by the name I have given it in the Windows
"Computer Name" tab, and the Nintendos by the string "Nintendo DS").
However, I cannot figure out how to give our Macs an identifying
string. They are late-model machines running OS X 10.4.6. The Macs do
have an identifying name that shows up, for example, in the "About this
Mac" window, but that name does not show up on the Netgear Device Name.
Just to be clear, the Macs connect (wirelessly) just fine to the
Netgear, and I can see them via their MAC addresses, but I want to give
them identifying strings as well. That is mostly so I can block out
the kids computer(s) when they are becoming too glazed over. I just
can't remember which MAC address goes to which machine, and I don't
    want to try.

Most of my problem is that I don't know the official name of the field
which the Netgear identifies as "Device Name". If I knew that I
imagine I could search the Mac Help for it. So can somebody either
tell me the name of this network identifying string, and/or tell me how
to enter it on our Macs? Many, many thanks.

    Mike

Try setting a computer name on the Sharing Preferences Panel.

Try setting a computer name on the Sharing Preferences Panel.

There is a name set in there now. I would expect that to show up on
the Netgear but it doesn't. I'll try entering another, shorter name.

Wow, the shorter name did it. We had names like "Joe Smith's iMac G5".
Those don't show up. When I changed it to "Joe Smith" it showed up.
I guess it either doesn't like a long name or it doesn't like the
    apostrophe.

So problem solved, thanks to your suggestion which made me go back and
fool with the names. Now, does anybody know the official name of this
    network name field?

Glad to help. I think the name you're looking for is "hostname", or some
    such.

The apostrophe was the reason if my experience is any indicator.
