    I am running OSX 10.4.5 (I think: see below) on a G4.
I recently used Software Update to download the OSX 10.4.6 patch and
all went well until, near the end of the installation phase, I
received a warning that the installation had failed (no reason given,
of course). I retrieved the .dmg file from the Trash and attempted to
mount it and received the massage "Device not configured".
I subsequently downloaded and attempted to mount the standalone 10.4.6 updaters (both Incremental and Combo) but all attempts to mount ANY
..dmg file fail with "The following disk images failed to mount" or
"Unable to attach <filename>" followed by "Device not configured".
System profiler is telling me that my system is at 10.4.6, but I find
it hard to believe since, amongst other things, all .dmg files have a default "Open With" of "DiskImageMounter.app" which I have never heard
of (and cannot find), and I get almost identical errors when
attempting to mount the image files with Disk Utility. I am loath to
return to 10.4.0 and start over. Any suggestions?

DiskImageMounter.app is the standard program used to open disk images.
    It's located in /System/Library/CoreServices. I don't know what would
cause the problem you're having apart from a damaged DiskImageMounter.

    Things to try:
Reboot the computer (you've probably already done that).
Run Disk Utility and repair the disk permissions on the hard drive.
Reinstall DiskImageMounter from your 10.4 disks. There's a shareware
program called Pacifist which can install individual programs from an
    Apple installer package.
Open the disk image on another Mac and copy the installer package across.
This may not fix your problem though as it looks like DiskImageMounter
hasn't been updated since 10.4.0, so the 10.4.6 combo updater probably wouldn't contain a new copy.

OK. I found it (although neither Search nor Spotlight acknowledge its existence).

    Yup. Did that.

DiskImageMounter seems to have come into being after my initial 10.4.0
system, since I cannot find it on the installation disks. If I could
mount Pacifist, I'd try that :-(

Note that Disk utility can't mount any .dmg files, either.

Only one computer in my house.

Thanks for your considerate response, but I'm still in the mire. I'm accumulating a backlog of unmountable .dmg files. It looks as if the
partial installation of the 10.4.6 patch has done some damage which
needs to be undone. Thanks again.
