• Nonexistant File Refuses to be Replaced

    From gtr@xxx@yyy.zzz to comp.sys.mac.system on Friday, January 01, 2021 17:42:01
    From Newsgroup: comp.sys.mac.system

Time Machine was "Preparing to backup..." for three weeks, before I
recognized it and spent 3 weeks fixing it. Now, after wiping the drive, reinstialling the software, and restoring from TM (my CCC drives would
not migrate), I updated my machine manually from the CCC backup. There
is apparently only one last stickky problem:

My Photos Library.photoslibrary was about 3 gigs smaller than the newer
one on the external drive so, as with my other clean up, I copied it
over and expected to see "Replace?" but no such question was asked. It
chugged along with 50G of photos, and when concluded reported that
there was already a file with that name. And ended.

But now there was no file with that name on the drive. Seemingly it
deleted it in preparation for the copy, but didn't drop the copy.

I tried copying the library again, this time to a pictures folder that
clearly didn't have any file named "Photos Library.photoslibrary". It
took it's sweet time, and I could see the file in the folder with the clock-like icon indicating a file was being copied. Then it aborted,
said there a file there with that name and removed my almost-copied
    version.

Any ideas on how to get my photoslibrary back in its rightful place? I
find I can load it on the external drive through Photos.app and it has
all the additional files added during the past 3 weeks of
    non-timemachine backup.

If you know how to use Terminal.app you can cd to the folder and
then ls -l to get sooper seekrit unix information Finder
    sometimes hides.

    cd <drag-and-drop-the-problematic-folder-on-the-Terminal>
    ls -l

See if the file is listed and if the permissions include rw???????

Hadn't thought of looking at it that way, but alas: No file exists. I
tried ls -al to see if it was invisible. nope.

I next tried to get it from a backup. It was greyed out, and when I
restored it anyway, it was 3G instead of ~48-ish.

But still, I now had a file there, so I again went to the external
drive and tried to manually copy it again. This time it at least asked,
do you want to replace it? Yes I did, and again it had it's little
indicator that the file was on its way with the icon progressively
    filling, as with a download.

Sadly, after a while the message appeared again: "The operation can't
be completed, because an item with the name "Photos
    Library.photoslibrary" already exists."

Tried a lot of different solutions. The best seemed to be this:

opt/double-click Photos to start with options. Select "create new
library". Once created, exit the program. The "Photos
Library.photoslibrary" begins downloading all files from iCloud. Wait
    4 hours; done.

I assume if one were not using iCloud to store pictures one could call
the .photoslibrary file anything and put it anywhere.

You can create the Photos library anywhere you want (on an external
drive for example) with no problem. You possibly can name it whatever
you want too, but probably best to leave it as what Photos expects it
    to be called.

You can even have multiple libraires, but you do need to manually
switch between them when starting up Photos with the Option key held
down ... and you can't use iCloud syncing, because that would just
create a mess when you keep changing libraries.

How Apd determines when to use his stupid flood script to best emulate
the style of Commander Kinsey's posts http://usenet.sandman.net/misc/snit_flood.
This forum is a puss-filled cyst. Everyone is Apd -- the oldest gag in

I can not agree with that. Bewilderment is bewilderment and there are
many who are in agreement with it. Many are even doctors.

Apd was once again a charlatan by pretending to not speak to Commander

Finder is easy to use, but totally useless when there is a problem.

With Finder, it is better to copy subfolder by subfolder, so you at
least know which one has a problem. And then can work file by file
within that one till you find the problem one.

The other option is to use the command line with cp with proper
arguments are recurvive flag and -v to generate line for each file and
pipe output to a log file. You can then look at log file and find
exactly which files failed to copy.

Not sure how finder copies are made and what sort of roll back mechanism
it has. (or does it delete original file before trying to create the
    copy with same name?).

With command line, you can also use sudo which basically eliminates most
"no provilege" errors for files you are not meant to change. (or you
can chmod the source tree to ensure all files in the source have
protection that lets you read/write the files.

    I prefer rsync.

    #v+
    alias copy='rsync -hav --stats '
    alias rmv='rsync -hav --stats --remove-source-files '
    #v-

I have those in my shell rc file

Not only did Steven Carroll's request not touch on the "distro", it has nothing to do with computers. Commander Kinsey should enter a drug rehab program. These losers get their kicks out of triggering annoyed reactions
to their crap, which is the very definition of a troll. You never take
blame for your own posts. Actions that are easily seen to be trolling.

Commander Kinsey gets excited that Steven Carroll is on the other end.
Imagine if Commander Kinsey walked up to a wall and delivered the punch
line. It wouldn't be worth it. Are you being stupid on purpose? With no
reason at all, as is usual for Commander Kinsey.

Until or unless RonB offers up his 'expert' Windows quick fix for evaluation, there is no threat, just insane assertions. I have known fish who argue
better than RonB does. RonB is *still* fixated on exclusively himself, as
I predicted, when it comes to the issue of hacking. And he completely ducks the proof that his "shill" has not only confessed to engaging in that against Shadow but he has said he deems it to be no significant deal... immaterial.

Thanks to RonB and his 'friends' you now need a go / no-go list (which
I set up for Thunderbird and Google Groups). If people start targeting him again I will feel compelled to... as I promised. I am referring to real posters here, not drive by loons, who are mostly him talking to himself.
