• Glitch in 10.4.6?

    From Jim@jimmi3REMOVE@adelphia.net to comp.sys.mac.system on Friday, April 07, 2006 11:33:17
    From Newsgroup: comp.sys.mac.system

Raised this in another NG, just one 'no problem here' response.

I upgraded my G4 Quicksilver from 10.4.5 to 10.4.6 via
Apple/Support/Downloads and all went well. Did the Repair Permissions
    before and after.

Now, in my System Preferences, there is no CDs & DVDs icon in the
Hardware section. The local Apple store says they have it in their
machines, never heard of such a thing, etc etc. No idea, either, on
    what to do.

I burned a test CD, got a box asking what to open, chose Finder, and
burned a CD with a couple of JPEGs from my iPhoto. Worked fine.

So, did Apple drop the CDs & DVDs from System Prefs? If not, should I
try to do anything to get it back in there? Copy the preference from
    another machine with 10.4.5?

    Thanx,

You already asked this on comp.sys.mac.apps, right? Seems to me this is limited to your machine right now. Hint: since all the prefs are little applets, see if the one that corresponds with that particular applet is
    on disk somewhere.

    Should be /System/Library/PreferencePanes/DigiHubDiscs.prefPane

Does this exist? Does it contain anything? What about the usual voodoo
for Preferences, which is to move the corresponding com.apple.systempreferences.plist out of the way and restart?

    Should be /System/Library/PreferencePanes/DigiHubDiscs.prefPane

Not there (just Opera under PrefPanes); did a Find on DigiHubDiscs:
    nothing anywhere.

Does this exist? Does it contain anything? What about the usual voodoo

Put the .plist in the Trash, restarted; new one added.

Any other thoughts? How about copying the DigiHub pref pane from
    another computer: eMac with 10.4.5???

    This one's really bugging me!

    Thanks

Yeah, and he didn't wait very long before apparently giving up. To the
OP: message propagation takes a bit. Then it takes time for people to
read your article, and bother to reply. Then THEIR message has to
    propagate to YOU. Be patient.

As someone suggested in your other post, this *might* be hardware
related. I find it hard to believe that this preference would depend on
the existence of (say) a combo DVD/CD drive, but who knows. Actually,
the G4 here at work is just a CD and CD burner, and I have all
    preference pane stuff.

Seems like you are not the only one who has seen things like this: <http://forums.osxfaq.com/viewtopic.php?t=3694&highlight=&sid=d2fcf2fbb30879fc5e9d4cc6ae37076f>

See if any of the advice in there helps. The fact that you are missing
these resources is interesting, to say the least.

I guess you can try to grab DigiHubDiscs.prefPane from your installation
media with something like Pacifist. It _may_ have been updated by a subsequent update, so if you have a 10.4.6 (or close) era package, it
may be worth checking the dates and checksums (i.e., "sum -r") on the
contents to see if they are the same.

    Run the combo updater again?

Are you sure you're looking in the right folder? Because there is a
whole set of ".prefPane"s in there:

    Internet.prefPane
    Keyboard.prefPane
    UniversalAccessPref.prefPane
    Classic.prefPane
    Bluetooth.prefPane
    Spotlight.prefPane
    ScreenSaver.prefPane
    PrintAndFax.prefPane
    SharingPref.prefPane
    Security.prefPane
    Expose.prefPane
    Mac.prefPane
    Localization.prefPane
    Network.prefPane
    Ink.prefPane
    StartupDisk.prefPane
    Appearance.prefPane
    SoftwareUpdate.prefPane
    DesktopScreenEffectsPref.prefPane
    Accounts.prefPane
    Speech.prefPane
    Displays.prefPane
    Sound.prefPane
    DigiHubDiscs.prefPane
    EnergySaver.prefPane
    Dock.prefPane
    DateAndTime.prefPane
    QuickTime.prefPane

There are "PreferencePane" folders in /System/Library (OS preference
panes only) /Library (machine-wide third-party preference panes) and /User/<username>/Library (user specific preference panes).

What you might need to do is to delete the preference panes cache, which should be in
    /User/<username>/Library/Caches/com.apple.preferencepanes.cache.
