• What PCI bus do I have?

    Greetings,

I have the very first version of the Mac G4 (400MHz) that came off the
shelf, I think they call it Sawtooth, but I'm not sure. None of the docs
tell me what is in the darn thing. I need to add a USB card to the PCI
bus to give me more hardware USB ports. It seems like nothing more
complex than a mouse will daisy chain on a Mac, so I need more direct
ports. But, when I look at PCI cards to add, they stipulate things like
Need PCI 2.0 or 2.1 or 2.2 - What does my G4 have in it? Where can I find
this information - Please don't say the "Apple site", I don't want to wade through Lasagne again for an answer... ?Or will I have to?

    thanks,
    DLC

If you don't want to wade through Apple's site, search through it
    instead! :)

Type this into google: site:apple.com "PCI 2.1"

I found several manuals for G3s and G4s that contain this:

"Your Macintosh has four expansion slots, each of which accepts a PCI
card up to 12 inches long. Install only expansion cards that come with Macintosh driver software and that comply with the PCI 2.1 standard."

It looks to me like PCI 2.0 is used with the Power Mac 9600, 8600, and
other series, and PCI 2.1 is used on several G3 and G4 systems. I can't
give you an exact answer, but I think it'd be safe to guess that the
entire G4 line supports PCI 2.1 cards.

If I've said anything wrong, someone please correct me! I don't want to misguide anyone.

    Doug
