• Copying applications from one Mac to another

This may seem silly, but in OS X, is it possible to copy an
application's icon from one Mac to another and have it actually
function on the other computer? Now that a lot of applications are
contained as packages instead of spread throughout the system, I
thought it would be easier to transfer a program from say, my desktop
to my laptop. For instance if I misplaced the install disks for
Stuffit, but it's running on my desktop, can I just drag the Stuffit
icon (which is the icon for the Stuffit package, right?) from my
    desktop to my Powerbook?

Please correct me if I'm way off base, and forgive my ignorance.

    Thanks,
    m

I couldn't speak for Stuffit in particular, but the answer
to your question is "it depends".

Certain apps are fully self-contained in the app package.
Those should be as simple as drag a copy over.

    Others are not.

If the app's original install procedure was "mount put a disk
image, drag the app over to your Applications directory", it
    should be that easy.

If the app's original install procedure was "start up this
installer program, give it your admin password, sacrifice
a couple of goats, reboot and do a funny dance", it's probably
not going to be that easy.

Note, too, that even if the install was as simple as "drag the
app over", if it was, say, a shareware app that you had to
enter a license code to fully enable, then the install on the
new machine will be an unlicenced copy - you will need to re-
    enter the license information.
