• Time Machine from iMac to MiniMac

So, got my wife a M1 MinMac for Christmas. She has been using a 2008
iMac with El Capitan. So, do make the changeover is it as simple as Time Machining to an external HD and restoring to the new computer? We have
kept an external HD for prior TimeMachine backups.

Do regular USB (2.0) drives connect to the MiniMacs? I have been told
that they will connect to thunderbolt ports without a problem.

    Thank-you
    Lyndon

connect the time machine backup to the m1 mac and let setup assistant
    do the rest.

    yep, but they're slow.

    1. Yes. Get an up-to-date backup of the iMac, and then you can use that
to set up her new machine.

    2. The name of the machine is a "Mac Mini", not "MiniMac".

    3. A regular USB 2.0 drive will work, but it will be very slow. Are you actually sure your drive is USB 2.0? Because USB 3 first became
    available in 2010.

    4. Regardless, you don't need to connect your USB drive to the Mac Mini
via Thunderbolt, as there are two USB Type-A ports on the M1 Mac Minis
which support USB 3 and are (of course) backwards compatible.

ONe last question. Seems there are tons of files generated in thre
System and user libraries. Do useless files also get transferred into
the new computer or is TimeMachine able to sort out the unnecessary
    files.

    Thanks again

What makes you think they're "useless files"? What kind of files are you talking about?

    1. Yes. Get an up-to-date backup of the iMac, and then you can use that

No, do NOT *restore* from Time Machine. It won't allow you to anyway
since the Mac Mini cannot run El Capitan.

You need to use Migration Assitant to *transfer* needed data and weed
out incompatible stuff. This is always best done during the initial
set-up process of the new Mac. (Migration Assistant, in the Applications/Utilities folder, after the set-up is possible, but it can
cause issues due to things like different user IDs.)

    - Use Time Machine to make an up-to-date backup of the iMac to
    an external drive.#

    - Once that's completed, plug the external drive into the Mac Mini
and start it up to begin the usual new Mac set-up process.

    - At some point you'll be asked if you want to use Migration
Assistant to transfer data from an old computer. You can then
choose to transfer the wanted data from the external drive.
You can also choose to some degree what is transferred.

    # You can use Migration Assistant to tansfer data directly from
the iMac without needing an external drive, as long as they're
both on the same network or you have the appropriate cables to
connect them directly to each other.

Some of the old apps may no longer work in macOS Big Sur / M1 CPU, so
you'll need to update them or find alternatives.

    2. The name of the machine is a "Mac Mini", not "MiniMac".

If you want to be truly pedantic, then the actual Apple name of the
computer is "Mac mini", with a lower case 'm' on the second word.

    3. A regular USB 2.0 drive will work, but it will be very slow. Are you actually sure your drive is USB 2.0? Because USB 3 first became

Yes, pretty much. You will probably have some older apps that need
updating or replacing, but all your data should migrate just fine.

    Yes.

They will if you have a USB dock, but the Mac mini also has two USB-A
    ports as well.

At one point, he said a usenet denizen was "obsessing" over him, which
was defined as mentioning any of his socks. So -- in Despicable Owl's 'claim', that an app has been made public is "confirmation" that Shadow built it

He is unmistakably lying, he got busted and he's doing the familiar BS
