Mac Mini M1, Big Sur. My Mac doesn't want to communicate with my iPhone
6 (I know, I know.) Image Capture sees the phone and tells me to 'Please unlock "iPhone"' but my iPhone doesn't offer me anything to unlock.
Googling doesn't bring up anything about iPhone 6 being incompatible
with Big Sur Image Capture. Maybe I'm the last one on earth still using
an iPhone 6?
What version of iOS is on the iPhone? Are you connecting via wi-fi or
cable? What are you connecting for - just photos, or backing up, or
syncing other items?
I rebooted the phone and now Photos and Image capture can see it, but no photos are found. Stragely, if I text or email a photo from my phone to someone (anyone), Image Capture and Photos can all of a sudden see that
and import it. It's a very odd problem--like the photo has to be
"tagged" for the Mac to see it.

try photos or lightroom.
After two more reboots of my phone and my Mac and answering Trust a few
more times, Photos and Image Capture now see all my phone's photos.
I hope Big Sur's bugs get ironed out soon. A couple more I have noticed: -Firewire 800 drives don't play nice (see my other thread)
-USB drives spin up and down all the time at irregular intervals,
despite "put hard disks to sleep" being unchecked

-Screen lock problem. Tt randomly turns on and can't be unlocked the
normal way. Many reports about this
-Bluetooth pairing problems, my keyboard will randomly disconnect and
pair with the iMac in the other room
-I have had at least 7 random reboots (kernel panics) since I got this

just under 4 weeks ago
The "unlock" refers to someone typing the passcode or touchID to make
the home acreen accessible. (akaL requires you authenticate on the phone
so that the phone allows your computer to access it).

The Image Capture" and other photo apps use standard camera USB
interface. (forrget the name of protocol). But this will only work once iPhone is unlocked. (iPhone makes the restriction).
The synching proces, as well as backup may no longer be in iTunes, but
the backend is the same with some modules dealing with different
versions of IOS.

Funny, I've got 12.5.1 on mine.
