• Names as well is icons in Dock?

Is there any way to get the Dock to show the name of things in it, not
just the icon? I may have been too tired and overlooked something, but
I couldn't see any setting in the Dock preference panel that would do
that. I'd like to put a few folders in the dock so I can quickly get
to their contents, but as it is now they'd all look the same. Yes, I
suppose I could use a custom icon that would show the folder name, but
the other would make more sense if possible.

The folder names *will* show when you mouse over them. Not exactly what
you're after, but I think it's the best you can get with the current incarnation of the dock.

Is there some reason you can't simply mouse over them once they're added
to the Dock? That shows the name, both for files/folders and
    applications.
